Gottfried Helnwein receives the 2009 Steiger Art Award
The award ceremony took place in the Bochum Jahrhunderthalle (Century Hall) on March 28th 2009
Further prize winners this year were Sir Bob Geldof (music), Maximilian Schell (life’s work), former president of Germany Prof. Dr. Roman Herzog (tolerance), Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxemburg (charity), Veronica Ferres (film), Sir David Frost (media), former prime minister of Italy Romano Prodi and former president of Poland Aleksander Kwasinewski (Europe). Dr. Antje Vollmer, former speaker of parliament, gave the laudation for Gottfried Helnwein .  
The STEIGER AWARD honours personalities for directness, openness, humanitarianism and tolerance.
Previous award winners include the Nobel Peace Prize winners Shimon Peres and Mohamed El-Baradei, State President Hamid Karzei, former Federal foreign minister Hans Dietrich Genscher, Iris Berben, Franz Beckenbauer, Josè Carreras, Sabine Christiansen, Peter Maffay, Tokio Hotel, former Persian empress Farah Diba-Pahlavi, journalist Dr. Franz Alt, UNEP – general director Achim Steiner, Wolfgang Niedecken, Prof. Peter Scholl-Latour, musician Robin Gibb from the BEE GEES, former director general of the WDR television channel Friedrich Nowottny, Manfred Krug, Friedrich von Thun and Joachim Fuchsberger, US5, Prof. Heinz Sielmann, Boris Becker and the prime minister of Luxembourg Dr. Jean-Claude Juncker.

Amongst this year’s eulogists were Minister-President Christian Wulff, chairman of the Free Democrats Dr. Guido Westerwelle, Federal Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, TV journalists Sabine Christiansen and Gero vom Boehm, Dr. Wolfgang Gerhardt, president of the Bundestag Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, as well as the former speaker of parliament Dr. Antje Vollmer.
The ceremony was opened by Minister-President Dr. Jürgen Rüttgers and Mayoress Dr. Ottilie Scholz. ZDF television presenter Cherno Jobatey presented the programme.
