The innovative contemporary dance company known as CORE Dance Collective is making quite a name for its young – only 4 years old – self. The first company to be commissioned by the Crocker Art Museum to create a dance, CORE created a stark piece inspired by the work of artist Gottfried Helnwein, whose work is on display at the museum through April 24.
Beginning Thursday and continuing April 22 and 23, CORE will present "Awake My Soul," with choreography by Kelli Leighton, at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center. The program will feature a restaging of "Silent Noise," the piece commissioned by the Crocker, and "After the Storm," a dynamic new piece celebrating the human spirit. The dances exemplify the intimate emotion and explosive athleticism that is found in contemporary dance.
"Awake My Soul" by CORE Dance Collective, 7:30 p.m. Thursday and April 22 and 23 at Benvenuti Performing Arts Center, 4600 Blackrock Drive, Sacramento. Tickets: $15 advance, $20 at the door, $12 student rush (Thursday only). Info: (916) 491-1028, www.benarts.org, www.coredancecollective. org.
