Internationally known Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein will have his first one-man museum exhibition in the United States, opening at the Legion of Honor in the summer of 2004. The exhibition, Gottfried Helnwein: The Child features a major theme that has appeared in his work over the last 35 years. For Helnwein, the child is the symbol of innocence, but also innocence betrayed. In today’s world, the malevolent forces of war, poverty, sexual exploitation, and the numbing predatory influence of modern media assault the virtue of children. Helnwein, who grew up in Austria in the somber atmosphere of a defeated country in the years following World War II, has an emotional tie to children who have been robbed of experiencing childhood without trauma. ...

'Personal Jesus' says everything that I would say if I were to write a song right now. I was listening to it on a CD I just bought because I wanted to really take a step away from the world. I wasn't sure if I was going to put out a 'best of' or if I was going to do anything in general with music, because there's a frustration level that the more commercial you are, the more marginal you are - also, the lack of art that exists in entertainment, and the lack of interest. People are much more content with watching The Real World and reality television, than living their own lives, or watching something that comes from imagination.
You know what it is? It's not even Bush's fault. It's America making itself the Third Reich.
Imagination is a necessity, and I don't think it's sort of bad. I can dream up some image like I did with Helnwein, and they're "bad," they're forbidden, but I can take an image that's far worse, that's on CNN and it's reality. So we can't get censored. It's the real world.
But that's a bad message to send to kids growing up, I think.

* Helnwein's Epiphany I has been up on our site for years now. For a while I used it as wallpaper on my desktop. Perhaps that explains how the first hypertext poem came to be one about the Virgin. But as I struggled with updating the site, I checked all my old resources and came across materials that explain Helnwein's commitments and meanings far better than I could alone. ...

...Sicher kann Photorealismus langweilig sein... dieser typische mit Motiven wie Autos, Kühlschränken etc., der in den 60ern und 70ern 'modern' war, kann mich auch nicht begeistern... Aber Helnwein nutzt diese Malweise ja, um den besonderen Ausdruck von Qual in Kindergesichtern darzustellen, was er, meiner Ansicht nach, so gekonnt tut, dass man seine Bilder fühlen kann... Ganz besonders meine ich da - wie ars diabolicus auch - die Reihe riesiger Kinderportraits in Köln damals...
Die richtig 'harten' Bilder (die entstellten Körper und Gesichter) sind ausserdem auch gar nicht photorrealistisch...
Und: Helnwein ist ja nicht nur Maler, sondern auch Aktionskünstler, was ihn zu einer vielseitigen - und damit noch mal interessanteren (ich kann meine Begeisterung einfach nicht zügeln ) - Künstlerpersönlichkeit macht... ...

Die Fotografieausstellung zeigt Portraits, welche die Künstler Dennis Adams, Nabuyoshi Araki, Christian Boltanski, Jochen Gerz, Gottfried Helnwein, Pjotr Uklanski, August Sander zu dokumentarischen, historischen oder künstlerischen Themen gesammelt haben.
Gottfried Helnwein portraitiert in der Serie „Faces“ Persönlichkeiten wie Michael Jackson, Willy Brandt, Maximilian Schell, Elton John, Andy Warhol, Leni Riefenstahl u.a.. Obgleich vielmals zuvor fotografiert und jedem aus den Medien bekannt, zeigen sie sich in den Bildern jenseits aller Eitelkeiten, in einer ungewohnten Offenheit und Ehrlichkeit, die geprägt ist von Verfall und Tod. ...

Helnwein, Dr.: Wiener Exorzist und Parapsychologe, der gelegentlich mit Dorian zusammenarbeitete. Seit seinem Tod nutzt das Dämonenkiller-Team ab und zu das Haus Helnweins und die Reliquien, die sich darin befinden. Siehe auch Heftroman 23, EA: "Jagt die Satansbrut". ...

Еще несколько любимых мной фотографий. Эти три были сделаны человеком по имени Gottfried Helnwein (www.helnwein.com). Фотграф часто снимал детей, причем как раз так, как мне это нравится. А еще он сотрудничал с Мерлином Мэнсоном. Такие дела. Фото сверху входит в серию "Modern sleep". Восхитительная спящая девочка, хочу себе такую же. Эту фотографию гигантских размеров можно было наблюдать в составе инсталляции на Los Angeles ARTshow 2003, Santa Monica. На фотографии справа под текстом - инсталляция Ninth November Night 1988. Дети дети дети, множество фотографий, каждая размером 370 на 250 сантиметров. Красиво. ...
