The Cobra Museum
is a design by the famous Dutch architect Wim Quist. It is seen as one of the most beautiful museums in the Netherlands. Other highlights from the architectural oeuvre of Quist are the extension of the Kröller Muller Museum in Otterlo, the Southwing of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Museum Beelden aan Zee in Scheveningen and the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam.
A visit to the Cobra Museum is introduced by Karel Appels unique fountain sculpture. Inside, one is struck by the daylight, the beautiful open spaces of the exhibition rooms and the visual presence of nature, which create a pleasant art-oriented atmosphere. The Cobra Museum exhibits works from its impressive CoBrA collection, permanently. On a regular basis works by the artists who belonged to the related movements Vrij Beelden (1946) and Creatie (1950-1955), of which the museum also possesses a significant collection, are shown. Separate from its collection presentations the museum organises prominent exhibitions of international avant-garde art. CoBrA was of exceptional importance for the development of modern art in the Netherlands. |
