Der österreichische Künstler Gottfried Helnwein erinnert sich daran, welchen Stellenwert die Welten von Mickey Mouse und Donald Duck in der grauen Nachkriegszeit seiner Wiener Kindheit für ihn spielten, warum die Unterscheidung in „high“ und „low“ in Bezug auf Kunst sinnlos ist und was Comics zu einer Weltsprache macht.

At SOLO Independencia, in Madrid, Helnwein: mundos invertidos unfolds less as an exhibition than as a conceptual disturbance. The first major retrospective in Spain of Gottfried Helnwein resists the stabilizing logic typically associated with retrospection. Rather than organizing a career into legible phases, it constructs a fractured visual field in which time, memory, and representation are held in a state of permanent tension.

Radical Beauty radically questions our perception of beauty, attractiveness and aesthetics. In this globally unique photo project, over 60 internationally renowned fashion and art photographers worked together with people with Down syndrome to develop individual images and photo series. Surprising and unique portraits were created in professional studio conditions. The protagonists include experienced performers such as actresses Sarah Gordy (UK) and Lily Moore (USA), but the majority of them lead a life outside the limelight.

Helnwein ist nicht nur ein von mir bewunderter Künstler, den ich zweimal mit großem Erfolg gezeigt habe, sondern auch ein Freund und ich wünsche, dass alle seine Träume in Erfüllung gehen. Aber es nicht die Aufgabe des Generaldirektors der Albertina, die Pläne von Künstlern zu Ende zu denken.

Gottfried Helnwein’s paintings of children are both touching and disturbing. The hyperrealistic character of his images serves to intensify this effect still further. The vulnerable and defenseless child serves as the central motif in his examination of the themes of pain, injury, and violence.

Helnwein imitates the alleged incorruptibility of a camera using the means of painting. In fact, the artist uses photographs as a template and thus comes even closer to reality. But it is precisely painting that relegates all depictions to the realm of fiction. The precision and cleanliness of his working method transform dirty reality into meditative, quiet images that, when viewed, inevitably maneuver us into a dilemma between beauty and horror, admiration and disgust, attraction and protest. Helnwein's works are timeless statements against appropriation, aggression, destruction and violence.

Für Tayfun Belgin ist der Mann einer der wichtigsten lebenden Künstler. Deshalb zeigt der Direktor des Hagener Osthaus-Museums ab März eine große Werkschau des österreichischen Malers Gottfried Helnwein. Die meisten Bilder kommen aus der Wiener Albertina, wo Helnwein derzeit die Säle füllt.

To celebrate the 75th birthday of Gottfried Helnwein, the ALBERTINA Museum is showing a large-scale exhibition of his output from the past three decades. The Vienna-born artist Gottfried Helnwein’s oeuvre is characterized by his interest in the themes of pain, injury, and violence. A central motif of his is the figure of the vulnerable and defenseless child as a proxy of sorts, one that embodies all psychological and societal anxieties.

Representational Art has been an integral part of the visual arts for centuries, experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years. The works depict the world around us, often with a realistic approach or accurate representation, from the human condition to social and cultural issues, to the perception of our surroundings. Representational painting has been used to depict a wide range of emotions, stories, and themes, becoming a powerful form of expression that conveys messages of social and political importance, as well as capturing the beauty of the everyday. Popular culture has also often been inspired by representational paintings, especially cinema, through films that explore themes and issues such as romance, beauty, fear, and the human condition.

Contemplating Character explores the evolution of portraiture in 81 works on paper by 68 artists. Executed by some of the most famous portraitists in Europe and America, the works range in date from the 18th century to present day and encompasses the many art styles and movements during this expanse of time.

Die Blicke bleiben jedoch an den schwarz-weißen Gesichtern hängen, die mal neutral dreinblicken, mal beim spontanen Performen aufgenommen wurden. Werbe-, Reportage- und Porträtfotograf Richard Avedon lichtete ab den 1950er-Jahren etwa US-Präsident Dwight D. Eisenhower, Marilyn Monroe oder Humphrey Bogart vor neutralem Hintergrund ab. Gottfried Helnwein arbeitete die Gesichtszüge überlebensgroßer Persönlichkeiten wie des jungen Michael Jackson, Elton John und Andy Warhol heraus. Die ebenso überlebensgroßen Bilder können bis zum 6. November besichtigt werden.

Die Ausstellung The Face in der ALBERTINA MODERN zeigt ausgewählte Werke zeitgenössischer Porträtfotografie aus der Sammlung der ALBERTINA. Die Fotografien von internationalen und nationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zeigen, wie facettenreich das Thema Porträt sein kann: Der Bogen reicht von eindringlichen Bildnisstudien berühmter Persönlichkeiten über Porträtaufnahmen von KünstlerInnen in ihren Ateliers bis hin zu Arbeiten, die sich mittels serieller Aufnahmen eingehend mit den Porträtierten und ihrem Lebensumfeld auseinandersetzen. Über die gezeigten Fotografien werden Themen wie kulturelle Identität, persönliche Beziehungen, diverse Lebenswelten aber auch Fragen der Herkunft und des eigenen Ichs verhandelt. Zu sehen sind u.a. Werke von Richard Avedon, Gottfried Helnwein, Chuck Close und Franz Hubmann.

Es gibt eine „Replik“ des österreichischen Malers Gottfried Helnwein auf diese Richter-Arbeit, nachdem u.a. Alice Schwarzer kritisiert hatte, dass Richter keine Frauen gezeigt hatte.Diese 48 Frauenportraits aus dem Jahr 1991, 1994 von Peter und Irene Ludwig erworben, gehören heute auch dem Museum Ludwig. Yilmaz Dziewior: Die „Replik“ des österreichischen Malers Gottfried Helnwein, 48 Frauenportraits aus dem Jahr 1991, 1994 von Peter und Irene Ludwig erworben, zählen zum Sammlungsbestand des Ludwig Forum in Aachen. The exhibition is dedicated for the first time to this level of reflection in Helnwein’s work and first summarizes those dark paintings in which the image is developed out of blackness and deep blue (as a romantic keynote) and leads over to the atrocities of the Nazi regime, in that in particular the experiments on imprisoned persons and those segregated into psychiatric wards underpin the racial ideology. The central motif of almost all of Helnwein’s pictures is the innocent child, above all defenselessly at the mercy of adults. The childlike nature, from the innocence of the early years to young girls who themselves take up arms in his more recent works, shows differentiated facets of the soul that are stirring, emotionally gripping, and technically brilliantly realized.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis the world premiere of PASSION could not take place at the PalmKlang Festival. In these challenging times we were inspired by a main message of PASSION: The hope for resurrection. Therefore we joined forces with other art forms and developed a new concept for the premiere; we exchanged the stage for a museum and the audience for a camera. On the 3rd and 4th of July 2020 we spent the night at the Albertina Museum in Vienna. Surrounded by and inspired by the art of Gottfried Helnwein, we brought PASSION to life. The result is this film, a resurrection of our artistic beliefs and hopes.

Koblenz, 14.12.2020, 17:45 Uhr Von Schwarzer Romantik bis Futurismus: Ludwig Museum stellt Programm 2021 vor „Mit Ludwig geht nicht nur der größte, sondern auch der menschlichste Mäzen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wenn Sammeln Kunst ist, dann war Ludwig das größte Genie dieses Metiers, gewissermaßen Picasso und Walt Disney in einem.“ Diese Zeilen schrieb Gottfried Helnwein am 1. August 1996 in einem sehr persönlichen Nachruf zum Tod von Peter Ludwig. Der Künstler gehörte zu den Ersten, deren Werke Ludwig und seine Ehefrau Irene sammelten. Deshalb ist es nur folgerichtig, wenn das Ludwig Museum Koblenz vom 14. März bis zum 6. Juni mit einer Helnwein-Schau in das Ausstellungsjahr 2021 startet.

Not only have science and medicine always been involved in the exploration of the oral cavity, but also art and cultural history, from antiquity to the present. The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg traces this broadly diversified path of the history of the motif within the frameworks the exhibition On Everyone’s Lips. From Pieter Bruegel to Cindy Sherman. With over 250 works of art by, among others, Albrecht Dürer, Pablo Picasso, Max Klinger, Marina Abramović, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois and Gottfried Helnwein. it is the most comprehensive exhibition on the theme of the oral cavity in art in Germany to date.

The opening exhibition of ALBERTINA MODERN, entitled The Beginning. Art in Austria, 1945 to 1980,offers the first-ever comprehensive overview of a period that numbers among Austrian art history’s most innovative.The Beginning presents the most important artistic stances situated at the threshold of postmodernism—from the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism to early abstraction, Viennese Actionism, kinetic and concrete art, Austria’s own version of pop art, and the socially critical realism so characteristic of Vienna

Some art alludes to the darker sides of Austrian history, including Gottfried Helnwein’s photorealistic images of wounded or poisoned children. “These artists have something in common: They all turned against the ideals of the Third Reich,” said Mr. Schröder. “I’m doing a kind of exorcism,” he added. “Exactly here, where ‘degenerate art’ was shown, I’m showing artists who after 1945 declared war on the degeneracy of war.”

Disney-Chef Bob Iger steuerte ein Micky-Maus-Bild des britischen Künstlers Damien Hirst als Leihgabe bei. In der Ausstellung sind auch Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud und der Österreicher Gottfried Helnwein mit einem riesengroßen Porträt eines grimmig grinsenden Micky vertreten.

Though the Albertina was founded in 1776, it makes an effort to showcase contemporary art, both by Austrians and foreign artists. This winter’s exhibit features more than 70 pieces of art created in the second half of the 20th century by a variety of artists including Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Gottfried Helnwein, Andy Warhol, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig.

Ausgangspunkt ist die Dankesgeste an die Ludwigs, die entsprechend an mehreren Stellen auftauchen, sei es im expressiven Porträt des Sammlers von Bernhard Heisig, sei es in den monumentalen Tafeln von Gottfried Helnwein, der die Köpfe des Paares jeweils auf fast zwei Meter hohe Leinwände malte, einmal fotorealistisch, einmal in einer fast schwarzen Variante, bei der man erst nach längerer Zeit erkennt, dass auch in dieser Nachtversion Peter und Irene Ludwig verborgen sind.

The focus of Albertina Contemporary lies on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of postmodern art. In this year’s presentation of contemporary output at the Albertina, works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Gottfried Helnwein, Alex Katz, Kenton Nelson, Imi Knoebel, Maria Lassnig, and others take centre-stage.

The exhibition focuses on art from the second half of the 20th century, featuring both the stars and the broad diversity of art after 1945. Around 80 masterpieces serve to illustrate the multifaceted nature of postmodernism, ranging from Hyperrealism to abstraction and from color aesthetics to political themes, while also providing a clear impression of the complex parallel trends of the past few decades. Works by Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Arnulf Rainer, Georg Baselitz, Alex Katz and Maria Lassnig and others take centre-stage. A generous donation by Gottfried Helnwein has made possible to show seven high-quality paintings by the famous Austrian artist at the exhibition.

For the first time, the Albertina is staging an exhibition on two levels of the museum: over 2,500 square meters’ floor space host a broad survey of the Albertina’s collecting strategy for contemporary art. From the over 10,000 works acquired over the past 18 years, around 350 works by 55 artists have been selected for this presentation.

In 1971/72 Gerhard Richter created a series of 48 iconic portraits of men that influenced Modernity, in a photorealistic manner based on black and white photographs in encyclopedias. Exactly 20 years later, in 1991/92 Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein replied with a cycle of 48 portraits that depict exclusively women of historic influence.  In contrast to Gerhard Richter’s men in gray, Helnwein painted his women in fiery red. Both Helnwein's and Gerhard Richter's works, which are part of the collection of the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, are being shown together face to face for the first time as the centerpiece of the 'exhibition Undeniable Me', at Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague.

Albertina-Direktor Klaus Albrecht Schröder bedankte sich vielfach bei Helnwein für dessen Großzügigkeit, „in Namen der Albertina und von hunderttausenden Besuchern. Wir könnten uns solche Werke gar nicht leisten.“ Auch Kulturminister Thomas Drozda (SPÖ) war bei der Präsentation der Bilder anwesend, um „Danke zu sagen“. Er schätze die Arbeiten Helnweins sehr: „Er ist ein Künstler, der den Finger in die Wunden legt und Gewalt sowie den latenten Faschismus auf gleichermaßen faszinierende wie schockierende Weise aufarbeitet.“ Die großzügige Schenkung „an eines der wichtigsten Museen der Welt“ sei auch Beleg für die Kontinuität der Zusammenarbeit.

Children are literally saddled with the sadness and possibly the sins of their off-screen elders in Gottfried Helnwein’s haunting portrait of a child in military uniform. Helnwein’s doe-eyed child is half in shadow, one side of the face possibly bruised; the design on her jacket lapel suggesting a military uniform.

Mehr als 160 Exponate und ein digitales Medienkunstwerk, das über zwölf WLAN-Stationen zu einer virtuellen Reise durch die Sammlung einlädt, sind nun zu sehen – unter anderem von Hans Makart, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Maria Lassnig, Andy Warhol, Valie Export und Gottfried Helnwein.

Wenn Gottfried Helnweins Retrospektive in der Wiener Albertina am 13 Oktober schliesst, wird sich der Weltkünstler im Spitzenfeld hauseigener Blockbuster behauptet haben: mit 250. 000 Besuchern rangiert er bei Rubens und Magritte.

Die Zurschaustellung des eigenen Körpers als Verwesungsmasse beginnt mit den Selbstporträts von George Grosz als Suizidgestalt im Kaffeehaus und reicht über die wie durch den Fleischwolf gedrehten Konterfeis eines Francis Bacon bis hin zur Leichenfledderei am eigenen Leib bei Günter Brus, Kurt Kren oder Frank Tovey, dem jüngst verstorbenen Enfant terrible der experimentellen New-Wave-Szene der 1980er Jahre. Die Befreiung des melancholischen Bewusstseins durch den Tod bietet keine philosophische Perspektive mehr. Es ist ihm ohnedies schon anheim gefallen. Stattdessen wird der Suizid in einer Performance masochistischer Selbstverstümmelung kultisch sublimiert. In einer fotografischen Inszenierung Gottfried Helnweins erhebt sich der Künstler, fäulnisschwarz und monumental wie das Mahnmal einer letzen Einsicht: “So ist Verzweiflung, diese Krankheit im Selbst, die Krankheit zum Tode. Der verzweifelte ist todkrank. Der Tod ist nicht das letzte der Krankheit, aber der Tod ist in einem fort das Letzte. The exhibition focuses on macabre topics and their relations to the world of beauty and glamour in the art and visual culture, starting from the 1990s. The main connecting thread is the body: how it can be manipulated and (ab)used in visual-cultural practices. We will be showing a large amount of photography from the 1990s til today, as well as the videos, objects and costumes that meet the subject.

Die Albertina widmet Gottfried Helnwein eine umfangreiche Retrospektive, die alle Stationen seines bisherigen Werdegangs abbildet. Helnwein, einer der bekanntesten österreichischen Künstler der Gegenwart, wurde durch seine hyperrealistischen Bilder von Kindern berühmt. FACE IT - die erste Museums-Ausstellung Gottfried Helnweins seit mehr als 20 Jahren in Österreich ist mit 38.000 BesucherInnen nach knapp drei Monaten (10.3. - 5.6.2006) am Pfingstmontag im Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz zu Ende gegangen. Face It kann somit als die meist besuchte Schau eines zeitgenössischen Künstlers im Lentos verbucht werden.

Erste museale Werkschau des österreichischen Künstlers, der seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre zunächst in Deutschland gelebt hat und heute in Los Angeles und Irland ansässig ist. Die Ausstellung im grossen Saal des Museums zeigt Werke aus allen Schaffensperioden seit den frühen 1970er Jahren. Dabei steht das Thema des menschlichen Gesichts im Mittelpunkt, mit dem Helnwein sich in mehr als drei Jahrzehnten künstlerischer Arbeit auseinander gesetzt hat.In Österreich ist Helnwein nach wie vor als "Provokateur" und "Schockkünstler" im Bewusstsein. Der Name Helnwein stand damals für hyperrealistische Darstellungen verletzter und verunstalteter Menschen, oft Kinder, sowie für Bildzitate aus der Populärkultur. Angesichts der substanziellen Weiterentwicklung seines Werks, verbunden mit neuen Bildfindungen und dem Einsatz neuer Medien (digitale Fotografie, Video) gilt es, dieses Oevre heute umfassend zu betrachten. Dies erscheint nicht zuletzt auch im Kontext eines Booms neuer figurativer Malerei und angesichts des weitgehend durchgesetzten Bezugs auf Medienbilder sowie auf Populärkultur in der jungen Malerei interessant. Mit einem aktualisierten Blick auf Helnweins Bildsujets und seine Produktionsweise ist ein Künstler zu entdecken, der sich in erster Linie moralischen, emanzipatorischen Motiven verpflichtet fühlt und dessen Platz innerhalb der sogenannten "politischen" Kunst in vollem Umfang erst anzuerkennen ist.

Über 50 zeitgenössische KünstlerInnen thematisieren das Menschenbild

Mit dem Erwerb der ersten hundert Kunstwerke legte die Stadt Linz im Jahr 1953 den Grundstein zur Neuen Galerie der Stadt Linz, der Vorgängerinstitution des LENTOS. Seither wurden die Bestände kontinuierlich um markante Positionen der jeweils zeitgenössischen Kunst sowie um historische Nachkäufe erweitert. Das LENTOS verfügt nun über eine Schatzkammer, die mit etwa 1.700 Gemälden und Skulpturen sowie rund 12.000 Grafiken und 1.200 Beispielen künstlerischer Fotografie reichhaltig bestückt ist.

Kulturreferent Erich Watzl sah den Weg der vergangenen zehn Jahre als erfolgreich... Besonders stolz sei er, dass der internationale Künstler Gottfried Helnwein 2006 mit seiner ersten Ausstellung seit den 1980er-Jahren in Österreich nicht nach Wien, sondern nach Linz gegangen sei. "Das war ein Statement, dass eine offene Weiterentwicklung möglich ist."

Through December 11, the museum is presenting “Pop’d From The Panel,” a exploration of how comics and cartoon art have influenced the modern pop-art movement. The nearly 20 artists with works in the exhibit include provocative Mexican-born Enrique Chagoya, modern “street artist” Ron English, and such iconic contemporary figures as Roy Lichtenstein, Gottfried Helnwein, Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, and Christo. There are 26 two- and three-dimensional works in the exhibition, which is in the Downstairs Changing Gallery.

In cooperation with Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, this exhibition is exploring themes of human identity - the topic of "self" in the most varied of situations and visual expressions. This international project brings together works from Christian Boltanski, Gottfried Helnwein, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, Bruce Nauman and others.

Gottfried Helnwein looks more like a rock star than an internationally acclaimed artist. Dressed all in black, with a bandanna around his head and dark glasses hiding his eyes, he resembles, in a superficial way, Bono. Like Bono, he is concerned about the most troubling issues of our times: violence, inhumanity and oppression. There is a cinematic quality to all of Helnwein's works, which seem to be projected on a wide screen. These "stilled cinematic moments," as Crocker curator Diana Daniels calls them, are powerfully affecting. "He deals with difficult subjects in a way that isn't propagandistic," Daniels said. "It's an open-ended way of dealing with historic subjects that are in danger of slipping away from us." Many of the images are very disturbing, and the museum has issued a warning that some images may be challenging for sensitive or younger viewers. But the show is a powerful one, posing questions we all need to contemplate.

The exhibition GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN - INFERNO OF THE INNOCENTS at the Crocker Art Museum opens on Friday, January 28th from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Over more than four decades, the artist has pursued a singular, radical vision realized in monumental paintings and photographs.

TOP 10 The Gottfried Helnwein exhibition "The Child" at the Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco Fine Arts Museums, July) was chosen as the most important show of a contemporary artist in 2004. "In the first of two shows (the other at the Modernism Gallery in November), Helnwein's large format, photo-realist images of children of various demeanors boldly probed the subconscious. Innocence, sexuality, victimization and haunting self-possession surge and flicker in Helnwein's unnerving work."

During the past several years, the concepts of decadence have begun to appear more and more in art theory, often in relation to current art. Decadence is one of the continual properties of modern art. The commonness of the concept of decadence, or its parallel existence outside of the sphere of art, also enables new methodological processes and combinations, and discovers new territories and relationships. Decadent art is excessive, it exceeds the level of what is generally acceptable, and it provocatively demolishes the most sensitive taboos. Decadence is also firmly connected to the clear stance of outsider individualism. Starting on the 1970's, we can monitor the continual effort of the artists like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Nobuyoshi Araki, Jake a Dinos Chapman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Damien Hirst, Zhang Peng, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Gottfried Helnwein etc. to work with typical decadent themes.

Auf 1.200 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche wird den Fragen nach Außenseitertum und Selbststilisierung von Künstlern nachgegangen. Kuratorin der bis 26. April 2011 angesetzten, auf Basis der eigenen Sammlung des Hauses konzipierten Schau ist Alexandra Schantl. Der Titel "Ich ist ein anderer" entstammt einem Zitat des Dichters Arthur Rimbaud, kunsthistorischer Ausgangspunkt ist Egon Schieles Selbstporträt von 1910, erläutert das Museum in einer Aussendung.

200 Werke von mehr als 120 Künstlern

Auf rund 3.000 m2 Ausstellungsfläche spannt die Präsentation einen reichen Bogen vom französischen Impressionismus bis zur Kunst der Gegenwart. Mit wichtigen Werken des späten Picasso, Exponaten von Mark Rothko oder Francis Bacon führt die Ausstellung bis zur Kunst der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und findet ihren Abschluss mit Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer und Gottfried Helnwein. Die rund 200 Exponate stammen aus der über 30.000 Arbeiten umfassenden Sammlung an Gegenwartskunst der Albertina und der Sammlung Batliner.

An alternative title to “Angels Sleeping” for this exhibition could be “All Hail to the Wounded Child,” as many of the works center on irreparably wounded children (both externally and internally) as the innocent victims of war. The children in Helnwien’s works may also represent the lost or destroyed child in all of us, not only as victims of war, but as victims of modern society, with all its mindless violence and perverse attraction to aggressive mobs and disturbances. The exhibition Angels Sleeping is a thematic cross-section, predominantly of the painting work of the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. The five sections of the exhibition present the fundamental circuits of Helnwein’s work. The introduction comprises heads – faces, including the artist’s iconic self-portrait, painfully acute metaphors of the limits on freedom of expression in Austria in the 1970s and 80s. The artist’s merciless approach to the residues of the Nazi past of his country is a further theme, developed in monochrome, hyperrealistic painting. The central and still extremely relevant theme of Helnwein’s work however is das malträtierte Kind, the child exposed to suffering. The author engages with this theme in various positions from his early works from the 1970s up to the present day. His collection of works on this theme is given the largest space. Violence committed against children, in contrast with their passive exposure, distressed astonishment and impossibility of defending themselves against the world of adults is partially shifted into a further position, ironically entitled Art in Amerika. This presents the relationships of the white, frequently uniformed “majority” to other ethnic groups and minorities, particularly in the United States, sharpened by the photographic precision of the images.

Various themes and concerns are explored by the artists including gender, social, and ethnic identity perception of the self (Su-en Wong); distortions of scale (Eisenman and Philips); use of cartoon or highly stylized imagery (Wesley, Ali, Fujita, Ofili); utilizing the superhero image (Warhol and Ramos); revisiting the Surreal figure (Tyson, Dingle, Quinn, Gormley); composite images of fictional characters (Kauper, Yuskavage, Currin, Lijun, Schütte); emotionally charged faces and forms (Flannigan, Gottfried Helnwein); a twisted notion of reality that reflects a dark world view (McLane, Middlebrook); images of the human form moving through time and space (Herring, Nauman); and the spirit of Neo-expressionism (Clemente, Brown).

Helnwein was deeply influenced by the Holocaust, as well as by popular cultural references like comics and rock music. His imagery is unsettling, dark, and deeply compelling, carrying powerful messages of political disturbance and social unease.

The exhibit will explore the intersection of art, the body, and medical procedures, with the implicit fear of bodily pain (real or imagined) as a major theme. The human body is vulnerable and mortal, yet it is also the biological basis of human existence. "Body Anxious" includes works by artists from around the world, in, often, unconventional media, who examine the anxieties associated with medical procedures and instruments, and other experiences that remind us of our shared precarious biological condition. Artists include: Gottfried Helnwein, Kiki Smith, Diana Falchuk, James R. Southard, Drew Sellers, Cristin Millet and Chiharu Shiota.

An urban oasis — The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is San Francisco's most seductively situated museum From July 31-Nov. 28, the museum will present paintings, drawings and photographs by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. This section shows some thirty works based on Disney characters, created by a diverse group of modern and contemporary artists that includes Gary Baseman, Christian Boltanski, Gottfried Helnwein, Bertrand Lavier, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Peter Saul and Andy Warhol.

Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning... With its huge size, hyperrealist style, and disturbing content, this unsettling work bestows a psychological anxiety accompanied by a strong magnetic pull. Confronting it, we tend to stare-entranced by both its beauty and its seductive, malevolent overtones...

La manière la plus dialectique pour recycler, détourner, admirer et critiquer tout à la fois, demeure le médium photographique. Gottfried Helnwein propose des images inconvenantes, qui renvoient la pérennité des objets dérivés de Disney à des statuts diversement fétichistes: images saintes que l'on prie ou statuettes lubriques qui promettent des extases ambiguës.

Die Ludwiggalerie im Schloß Oberhausen mag bereits die zweite Präsentationsstätte von Gottfried Helnweins Ausstellung "Beautiful Children" sein, doch sie ist erste Wahl, was die Präsentation betrifft. In den großen Räumen verteilen sich rund drei Dutzend Werke, darunter eine kleine Auswahl von "Klassikern" der siebziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, als der Wiener Maler mit seinen typisch deformierten oder verbundenen Gesichtern bekannt wurde, und Reprisen älterer Schlüsselwerke wie etwa die in ihrer Brutalität berückend originalgetreue Micky Maus ("Midnight Mickey"), die hier in einer Version aus dem Jahr 2001 vertreten ist. Doch das sind Bilder, die längst in die popkulturelle Walhalla eingegangen sind. The museum contains a representative collection of mainly European art. There are individual works by many of the most important artists, including Rembrandt, Gainsborough, David, and many of the impressionists and post-impressionists - Degas, Renoir, Monet, Pissaro, Seurat, Cézanne and others. There are also representative works by key twentieth century figures such as Braque and Picasso, and works of contemporary artists like Gottfried Helnwein and Robert Crumb.

In den 70er Jahren reagieren in Österreich so unterschiedliche Künstler wie Wolfgang Herzig, Gottfried Helnwein und Franz Zadrazil auf die in den 60er Jahren die Kunstszene dominierenden Abstrakten. Gleichzeitig ist die erzählerische Struktur der Malerei in dieser Zeit oft viel klarer, von einer allzu grossen Bedeutungsaufladung gereinigt und damit auch von den "Wiener Phantasten" weit entfernt. Franz Zadrazil zeigt z.B. in seinen akribisch fotorealistischen Stadtbildern die Bildrealität der Fotografie mit den Mitteln der Malerei und reflektiert damit internationale Fragestellungen des Realismus. Die aufwändigen Figurenkompositionen von Wolfgang Herzig verweisen oft mit Härte, Ironie und Sarkasmus auf gesellschaftliche Realität. Noch weiter geht etwas später Gottfried Helnwein mit seinen hyperrealistischen Porträts, die fotografische Genauigkeit mit Referenzen an den Wiener Aktionismus (bandagierte, wundgezeichnete Köpfe) verbinden.

Group show, catalogue This is a selection of dynamic works from the collection of Mikki and Stanley Weithorn, demonstrating their commitment to social and political issues and artists of color. Although their collecting focuses on the contemporary, both well-known and emerging artists, selected historic pieces show the breadth of their interest and the roots of socially conscious work in the early 20th century.

Adults bring a trunkful of contradictory cultural baggage to any representations of children. That's what makes the work of Helnwein so powerful. In his show, "The Child," at the Legion of Honor (of the San Francisco Fine Arts Museums), deformed infants and bandaged children stir feelings of pity, defiance and uneasiness about exploitation. There's an ambiguously disturbing painting of a girl aiming a gun into an open refrigerator and another of a bare-breasted mother and child surrounded by Aryan soldiers. But the most haunting images may be the ones of children who seem strangely oblivious to the adult gaze. Some of Helnwein's children peer right past the onlooker. Others sleep, dreaming of anything but us behind their silky eyelids. And some, like the enormous, half- shadowed "Head of a Child" at the Legion, see straight through us with cloudless, infinite blue eyes. Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle, 17. November 2004

On Sunday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. the Museum of Tolerance commemorated the 65th anniversary of the infamous 1938 Nazi “Night of Broken Glass” (Kristallnacht) pogrom. The Wiesenthal Center's observance of the 65th anniversary of "Kristallnacht" was highlighted by the presentation of the work of Gottfried Helnwein and the screening of "Ninth November Night," a documentary about the artist's commitment to remind the world of the Holocaust.

Its so slow that the motion seems frozen, like a glacier that's constantly flowing and moving, though not perceptible to our eyes, because for us, who live short and fast, glaciers appear to be static and eternal. (excerpt) Other works in the exhibition present the dark side of cartoon characters. The prevailing narrative structure of many cartoons is a cycle of one's character's unrelenting attacks on another. Yet the violence of these scenarios is subverted and humor achieved by the lack of any permanent injury to the victim and the gleeful nonchalance of the adversary even during the most aggressive assault. Static representations of wounded or menacing cartoon characters can expose the violence and eliminate the humorous punch line. In Gottfried Helnwein's painting Mickey (plate 24), Mickey Mouse's physical features, which usually contribute to his appeal become a thin veneer of looming attack. Blown up to a monster scale and rendered in an austere gray palette, Mickey's smile is deceptive.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert vierzig ausgewählte Statements großer Photographen des 20.Jahrhunderts: von Cartier-Bresson, Lebeck, Chargesheimer bis zu Klauke und Helnwein wird jeweils eine bedeutende künstlerische Position gezeigt. Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich nicht auf das Einzelbild, sondern komponiert ganze Werkgruppen zu großformatigen Tableaus und unterstreicht so den "journalistischen Aspekt" in der Photographie dieses Jahrhunderts. "I ask, I do not answer." - My works are questions, not answers, says the Austrian, Gottfried Helnwein, time and time again focusing on the most sore points of contemporary, general and private history. The retrospective exhibition of this controversial artist was opened yesterday in Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art and is open until 22nd of November. Helnwein says he became an artist because, being born after the war, he had so many questions to ask. He also stresses that the same questions must be asked again and again. "I, as probably every artist does, have only one theme which I incessantly vary. The use of diverse techniques is but a means of getting closer to one's original goals."

Helnweins konst har den stora allmänheten lärt känna främst genom hans affischer. Han är också känd från pärmbilder till Life och Time. I sina arbeten behandlar Helnwein religionens och den allmänna moralens inverkan på barnens och minoriteternas ställning samt t.ex. åsterrikes och Tysklands nazistiska förflutna och det aktiva bortglömmandet av den. Både i hans porträtt och i hans psykologiskt träffande studier framträder en ångestfylld värdevärld.

"Child's Head", 1991, Oil and acrylic on canvas, 650x403.5 Pg. 278 The early stages of this monumental head can be seen in Helnwein's widely varied portrayals from the seventies of suffering children, but above all in the Cologne installation of anonymous children's portraits "9th November Night" from 1988. The human face, in particular the child's face, is of great fascination for Helnwein and consequently accounts for one of his central pictorial subjects. The monumental face of a little girl which is introduced here is, as it were, representative of all children. In our adult society oriented towards profit and success, children can almost be described as a fringe group, their interests indeed being observed in a comparatively modest fashion. Against this background, this monumentalizing of the face in connection with the hyperrealistic style of painting is to be understood as an oppressive irritation of our customary experience of perception. Originally the child's head was shown in a Minorite church in Krems, Stein; in fact it was placed at the focal point of a huge early Gothic room which lent the picture a positively sacral tone.

Wenn Kunst aus dem Westen den Weg nach Russland findet - um dort zu bleiben -, stehen zwei den Petersburgern inzwischen wohlbekannte Namen dahinter: Irene und Peter Ludwig, die dem Russischen Museum wieder eine Schenkung gemacht haben. The Gazette, Montreal Ann Dunkan CENT JOURS BEGINS NINTH SEASON To inaugurate the new exhibition space, which has to be one of the most dramatic in the city, Gosselin chose a powerful show of black-and-white photos by the Viennese-born German artist Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein's work is everything that Annie Leibovitz's, shown last spring at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, is not. While both shoot celebrities - Helnwein's subjects include Keith Richards, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, William S.Burroughs, and an extremly wasted Andy Warhol - Helnwein's work is concentrated on the Psychological rather than on the gimmicky and the theatrical.

It was to our good fortune that Gottfried Helnwein also strove to break away from the museum and gallery sector in order to communicate with a larger public. This appeared on a grand scale on the site between the cathedral and Museum Ludwig, and at a time of "photokina", with its hundreds of thousands of visitors. The 100 metre picture wall did not fail to hit its mark: it induced bewilderment as well as aggressiveness. After a few days numerous pictures had been slashed, one even stolen. Gottfried Helnwein saw the exhibition as a process which would continue and be reflected in later presentations. The pictures were not renewed, but patched up, so that this reminder of the persecution of Jewish people would bear the traces of a lack of insight and understanding in the present day.

An Installation by Gottfried Helnwein in memory of "Kristallnacht" (The Night of Broken Glass) 1938. The Installation was erected in fall 1988 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Pogrom in the night of November 9, 1938. The Installation was placed between Ludwig Museum and the Cologne Cathedral, alongside the railroad track of the central station of Cologne. A hundred meter long wall of pictures with large images of children's faces, in a seemingly endless row, as if made to "line up to be sorted" - "selected". With the faces of christian, jewisch and handicapped children, that lived in Germany in 1988. The first panel was white and had only one word written on: "Selektion".

Die Bilderstrasse zwischen dem Kölner Dom und dem Museum Ludwig ist hundert Meter lang. Jedes der Bilder ist vier Meter hoch. Es sind täglich Tausende, die den hinteren Teil der Domplatte passieren, und die weitaus meisten von ihnen, die nur die Bildersprache der Werbung an dieser Stelle kennen, sind verdutzt, empört, schockiert über die bleichen Kindergesichter,die im Scanachrome-Verfahren auf Kunststoffolie gebracht worden sind. Kaum war die Bilderstrasse installiert, kam es schon zu ersten Beschädigungen: Nachts wurde mit Messern in die, durch das Schminken verfremdeten, alt wirkenden grossformatigen Kinderportraits hineingestochen, ein Bild wurde gestohlen. Kölner Museen und die Stadtverwaltung erhalten täglich Dutzende Anrufe und befinden sich im Erklärungs- und Legitimationszwang.

"Ausstellungsoper", das ist ein Konglomerat von verschiedenen Elementen, von Bildern, Musik, Performance, Spontantheater und Video, die zu einem optisch wie akustisch bedrängenden Medienspektakel zusammenwirkten. Helnwein hat sich mit der gleichermaßen trivialen wie subtilen Ästhetik des Nationalsozialismus beschäftigt und versucht ihre Selbstentlarvung mit ihren eigenen Mitteln, wenn er zum Beispiel die Zuschauer mit dem ideologischen Gedankengut des Nationalsozialismus, etwa der Darstellung der "Gesäßformen der höheren und der niederen Rassen" oder dem deutschen Liedgut der Zeit über fünf Monitore in peinigender Penetranz konfrontiert. Oft sind es nur Wort- und Bildfetzen, die rhythmisch über die Bildschirme hämmern, begleitet von dem dumpf-leisen, zuletzt bis zum Dröhnen gesteigerten Sound der Patchwork-Gruppe, währenddessen vorn auf dem Podium zwei in deutsche Wehrmachtsuniformen gekleidete Köche ein pseudoreligiöses Meßritual zelebrieren. Schluß mit Knalleffekt - dann Stille: Von schwarz geschminkten Soldaten werden über die Treppe fünf Kühe hufdonnernd und hinter sich kleckernd in den Saal gezerrt.
