The iconic 1997 Rammstein album "Sehnsucht" is re-released as a Anniversary Edition, for the first time in remastered HD sound. In addition to the singles "Du hast" and "Engel", the album exclusively includes a new mix version of the track "Spiel mit mir". The black 2LP comes in a triple gatefold with a 40-page booklet and an embossed silver foil slipcase. The 40-page booklet features numerous unpublished and re-edited portrait photographs by artist Gottfried Helnwein.

When Strauss and Hofmannsthal wrote «Der Rosenkavalier» – setting it in an imaginary Rococo Vienna and yet closely linked to the decadent fin de siècle – they created a profound social comedy. It is not without melancholy that the Marschallin lets her young lover Octavian go when he falls head over heels with Sophie, who hails from Faninal’s bourgeois household. As voluptuous as Strauss' score is, it contains tender moments of dream and melancholy. Director Lydia Steier stages Strauss’ opera according to an aesthetic concept by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein.

Gottfried Helnwein: Ich habe jedem Akt eine eigene monochromen Farbpalette gegeben: Der erste ist ganz in Blautönen gehalten, der zweite in Gelb- und Goldnuancen, der dritte in Rottönen. Baron Ochs als Hauptfigur tritt jeweils in der entsprechenden Komplimentärfarbe auf, wodurch jeder seiner Auftritte einen visuellen Schock erzeugt.

Üppigkeit hat in der Oper gut Platz, doch hier kapert sie das Werk. Aber wer Gottfried Helnwein einlädt, erhält auch Helnwein. Er bietet freilich auch ganz starke und eindringliche Bilder, wie im berühmten Zeitmonolog der Marschallin. Solche Momente, überhaupt die unaufgeregten, ruhig dahinfliessenden, sind denn auch die stärksten dieser Produktion. 

Die visuelle Kraft des Abends kam von Ausnahmekünstler Gottfried Helnwein: Sein Bühnenbild und die Kostüme setzten mit kräftigen Flächen und monochromen Schattierungen in Blau, Gelb und Rot markante Akzente und triggerten Emotionen.

Vor knapp zwei Jahrzehnten arbeitete Gottfried Helnwein mit Maximilian Schell als Regisseur für den „Rosenkavalier“ zusammen. Jetzt hat er diese Strauss-Oper mit Lydia Steier in Zürich auf die Bühne gebracht. Der schillernde Auftakt einer neuen Intendanz.

Der Großkünstler Gottfried Helnwein macht die Kostüme, Joana Mallwitz dirigiert: Matthias Schulz eröffnet seine Intendanz am Zürcher Opernhaus mit Richard Strauss’ „Rosenkavalier“. Die Produktion des „Rosenkavaliers“ ist ein interessantes Upcycling. Die Regisseurin Lydia Steier sch 2007 den „Rosenkavalier“ in Los Angeles, Regie führte damals Maximilian Schell, aber nicht deshalb ging der damals 27-|ahrigen Steier die Aufführung nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Der Grund wer die Ausstattung vom Großkünstler Gottfried Helnwein.

Helnweins Ausstattung stammt ursprünglich aus einer lnszenierung von 2005 in Los Angeles, bei der Maximilian Schell Regie führte. Steier sah sie 2007, verguckte sich nach eigener Aussage in die Ästhetik und beschloss, Helnweins Bilder eines Tages von Schells anscheinend recht starrem Arrangement zu befreien.

The thing you should know about this "Rosenkavalier" is that it is terrific. Richard Strauss' opera sounds great and looks sensational. It is excellently sung, sumptuously conducted by Kent Nagano and, thanks to Gottfried Helnwein, wondrously strange. Helnwein — the Austrian artist (painter, photographer, performance artist, filmmaker) who has a studio in downtown L.A. — is known for everything from Marilyn Manson videos to Holocaust installations. He is responsible for the sets, costumes and that ad (which, by the way, looks like an image from a recent staging of a Schumann oratorio that Helnwein designed in Düsseldorf). Helnwein's vision of "Rosenkavalier" is monochromatic and a riot of color. It is oddly traditional yet seriously odd. It is updated but couldn't be more 18th century. And none of those opposites contradicts.

"For me, art is a way to fight back against everything I've experienced: I wanted to respond, but I didn't know how to articulate it. But I could paint it. That medium opened all doors. Certain images can reach so deeply into people's souls. "And I feel also like a witness to my times - that's my duty, my responsibility." One role of art, he believes, is to "force people to look at things they would rather not look at," an impulse he sees in Goya and Shakespeare.

The creator of the alluring image is artist Gottfried Helnwein, who transfers the power and pull of his photographic work (check out www.helnwein.com to get a taste of some of the heaviest, most uncompromising visuals you will see in several lifetimes) to the sets and costumes of Der Rosenkavalier. Helnwein's poster concept cuts through the traditional coyness and goes straight for the nugget of truth that no doubt had Lesbian and Gay audiences nudging and winking for the past century. With the bold-but-tender image of two gently bussing females, Helnwein gives the casual observer "something to think about." Oh, yes!

Helnwein's realization of the final scene takes the breath away: a view of dozens of bloodied children's bodies, some of them hanging, some of them turning over and over in mid-air, as a vocal ensemble sings their words while kneeling on stage. This vision connects eerily with an exhibition in the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre plaza, adapted from one the Austrian Artist mounted in Cologne in 1988, marking the 50th anniversary of the Nazis' anti-Jewish Kristallnacht. It shows two rows of innocent, haunted-looking child's faces, one row with eyes open; the other with eyes closed, lined up as if in a concentration camp (Selektion is the exhibit's title).

Ich kann mich erinnern, als dann die Beatles kamen, war das eine Erschütterung, eine Ungeheuerlichkeit, die bei der Generaton meiner Eltern Panik auslöste. Immer wieder hörten wir die Rufe: ‚Die gehören vergast, unterm Hitler hätte es das nicht gegeben!’ Wir ließen uns die Haare wachsen und wurden auf der Straße auch immer so begrüßt: ‚Ihr Gesindel, Ihr gehört's vergast!’ Ich war eigentlich kein Beatles-Anhänger. Ich fand sie interessant, aber erst der Auftritt der Stones war für mich das Schlüsselerlebnis. Es gab ja damals zwei Lager, die Beatles und die Stones Anhänger, die sich eine Zeitlang feindlich gegenüberstanden. Ich war immer auf der Seite der Stones. Die Beatles hatten ja am Anfang dieses gestylte, uniforme Band-Image mit ihren Pilzköpfen, schmalen Krawatten und den schicken Anzügen. Die Stones waren ganz anders, wild, verwahrlost, ungezügelt, verwegen. Es war die Ahnung einer Zeit des Ungehorsams, des Widerstands, der Rebellion. Sie haben uns den Geschmack von Freiheit vermittelt. Ihre Lieder waren härter, aggressiver, anarchistischer. Sie nahmen sich einfach alle Freiheiten und alle Mädchen und verhöhnten die Welt unserer Eltern. Und sie sahen vor allem genau so aus, wie wir gerne ausgesehen hätten. Für uns biedere, eingeschüchterte Nachkriegskinder, die wir wie Ministranten da standen, mit roten Ohren und Hitlerjugend-Haarschnitt - vorne ein Schopf und hinten bis zum Wirbel hinauf geschoren - für uns waren sie wie Götter, die aus einer höheren Welt zu uns heruntergestiegen waren.

Für das 8.Internationale Schumann-Fest in Düsseldorf brachte man nun ein kongeniales Team zusammen, um eine komplette szenische Umsetzung in der altehrwürdigen Tonhalle zu realisieren. Gregor Seyffert – mit Preisen geradezu überschüttete Tanzikone – hat zusammen mit Gottfried Helnwein – international geachteter Künstler und Bühnenbildner – ein im wesentlichen tänzerisches, hochintelligentes Konzept entworfen, welches alle Mittel moderner, multimedialer Bühnengestaltung beinhaltet; dem Besucher gehen förmlich die Augen über. Vor lauter medialer Aktivität könnte man fast die traumhaft schöne Musik und den Gesang vergessen. Frenetischer, nicht enden-wollender Beifall, eines begeisterten Düsseldorfer Publikums, für einen Abend, den keiner so schnell vergessen wird. Lebendigstes Musiktheater, welches der sich zur Zeit im Tiefschlaf befindenden Deutschen Oper am Rhein nicht nur konkurrenzlos den Ruhm abgräbt, sondern zeigt, daß Düsseldorf durchaus Weltklasse bieten kann. Warum nicht öfter ?

Das Haus an der Dammtorstrasse zeigt einen Klassiker der Moderne: Jürgen Flimm inszeniert "The Rake's Progress", Ingo Metzmacher dirigiert, und Gottfried Helnwein schuf das außergewöhnliche Bühnenbild. Der Maler, Fotograf, Bildhauer und Bühnenbildner Gottfried Helnwein gestaltet Bühne, Kostüme und Masken - nach Jörg Immendorff ist er der zweite Maler, der sich an die Strawinsky Oper wagt. Im Gegensatz zu dem Düsseldorfer Neuen Wilden geht Helnwein allerdings mit dem fotografischen Auge eines Kameramannes und mit großem Feingefühl als Kostüm- und Maskenerfinder zu Werke. "Was Gottfried Helnwein da gemacht hat, ist gewaltig," sagt der amerikanische Bassbariton David Pittsinger, ein erfahrener Strawinsky-Interpret, der in der Inszenierung den Teufel Nick Shadow singen wird. "Die Kostüme hat er als Maler entworfen, die Farben entsprechen den Klangfarben der Musik und denen der Figuren im Libretto," schwärmt der Sänger, dessen Lehrer Richard Cross noch selbst mit Strawinsky gearbeitet hatte.

Dance icon Gregor Seyffert, and Gottfried Helnwein, internationally renowned artist and stage designer, came up with a highly intelligent concept for the oratorio, which relied heavily on dance, but also comprised whatever means a modern, multimedia stage design might offer. Consequently, the audience’s eyes almost popped out of their heads. With all the media activities, one might almost forget the enchanting, beautiful music, and singing. Storming, unceasing applause by an enthusiastic Düsseldorf audience for an evening which is unlikely to be easily forgotten. This was an example of lively music theatre, which, unchallenged, not only stole the glory of Deutsche Oper am Rhein, which presently enjoys a period of profound hibernation, but proved that Düsseldorf may well offer first class art. Why not more often? (Peter Bilsing)

What dominates, however, in a manner I've seldom seen is Helnwein's use of color -- the monochromatic blue of Act 1 even extends to skin color. Herr von Faninal's house is bathed in a rich golden sheen, from the orange glow of Ochs' silly wig to the platinum of the lovely Sophie's almost-there dress. The final act, in a cheap restaurant, is mainly a glaring red, again from Ochs' wig to his skin and the costumes of the huge band of players. The walls of the restaurant are, incidentally, lined with Helnwein's own works, mainly huge photo-realistic portraits of contemporary women. The 200 costumes Helnwein designed for the piece deserve a whole review for themselves this is inventiveness gone wild, a genius concept, and a huge addition to the production. There might be purists in disagreement here, but this would seem to be a "Rosenkavalier" for the ages.

There has never been a production with such a quality around: amazing singing, brilliant direction, a shining orchestra and a magical set. The Israeli Opera is at its amazing best. Kurt Rydl only opens his mouth and he brings the house down. It is not only his great voice, it is his humor, his style, his singing. Soprano Nancy Weissbach (the Marschallin) touches heaven with her voice. It is a voice of a stylized diamond. Stephanie Houtzell has a charming stage presence with a voice that is no less beautiful than Agnes Baltsa. And a new star is born: Israeli soprano Chen Reiss (Sophie) projects a crystal clear voice. Maximilian Shell managed to puts a grain of sadness into the comic side of the opera and for a moment it seemed like Gottfried Helnwein’s magical set will start to sing as well.

We see the painter and designer jousting with the lighting designer over what will prove to be Helnwein’s greatest coup de theater, a hypnotic final-act tableau of dozens of “dead children” suspended in black space. This time there can be little doubt that Helnwein’s judgment is correct; even on screen the effect is startling and eerily beautiful.

SPIEGEL: Helnwein gilt wie Sie als Provokateur des Kulturbetriebes - haben sich da zwei verwandte Seelen getroffen? Manson: Ein Künstler, der nicht provoziert, wird unsichtbar. Kunst die keine starken Reaktionen auslöst, hat keinen Wert. Helnwein hat das verinnerlicht und entspricht damit genau dem Kern meiner Musik. Unsere Zusammenarbeit erschöpft sich nicht darin, dass ein Künstler einem Musiker ein Cover für sein Album malt. Wir schaffen zusammen Kunst, die unseren Gemütszustand wiedergibt. SPIEGEL: Helnwein sagt, Sie seien ähnlich einsam wie er. Manson: Ganz bestimmt. Es ist übrigens nicht nur schön, sondern auch befremdlich, jemanden zu finden, der tatsächlich das Gleiche liebt wie man selbst. Ich bin gewohnt für meine Ideen verurteilt zu werden - und plötzlich ist da jemand, der mich auf Anhieb versteht. Ich war nie ein geselliger Mensch. Das ist einer der Gründe, warum Leute wie ich Entertainer werden - weil sie anders nicht kommunizieren können.

Austrian born artist Gottfried Helnwein so often finds himself in the eye of the storm, it must feel like home. He is known for highly charged paintings and photographs of suffering children, Nazi themes, and then also magnificent bucolic landscapes. His fans outnumber his detractors, though, and he has won many admirers and collectors both in his adoptive home of Los Angeles, and around the world. Among them, California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenneger, actor Sean Penn, and musician Marilyn Manson, who is a frequent subject. He identifies strongly with the oppressed, and society's most vulnerable members: children. "When I see how kids grow up , how they are neglected and mistreated , how they get polluted with drugs, junk food, insane television and bad schools, it's terrible, - and dangerous, because they are our future. Children are sacred - we need to protect, support and encourage them."

As its title suggests, Gottfried Helnwein and the Dreaming Child chooses to focus on the Austrian art superstar that the Opera brought in to make its sets and costumes. The movie’s fortunate that said superstar, an eccentric with a thick Werner Herzog accent is as good as he is at painting.

The collaboration between Helnwein and the late poet and playwright Hanoch Levin is at the center of this documentary. Helnwein is hired as the production designer for an Israeli opera adaptation of Levin’s play, Dreaming Child. While the two had never met when Levin was alive, the opportunity to meld their work seems almost serendipitous. Helnwein believes their artistic vision is so much the same that he is obligated to stay true to Levin’s work. Director Lisa Kirk Colburn does an excellent job of portraying the process of an original opera production, particularly from the eyes of Helnwein, the production designer chosen specifically for the perspicacity he has for his art form.

Das Eindringen des Horrors in den Alltag hat wohl kaum jemand so beklemmend dargestellt wie der österreichische Künstler Gottfried Helnwein. Auf seinen Bildern nimmt die Gewalt derart Besitz von der Normalität, dass sie zum alles vergiftenden Elixier des Grauens wird. Viele seiner Gemälde, Plakate, Fotografien und Federzeichnungen zeigen Versehrung und Verstümmlung von Menschen, klinische Folterszenen, brutalisierten Kindern mit apathischen Blick, mit verbundenen Köpfen und Händen, oder mit ausradierten Gesichtern. Dennoch schockiert nicht die Inhalte allein: So umfassend scheint vielmehr Helnweins Perspektive auf das Leben vom Gefühl der Qual durchtränkt, dass selbst motivisch harmlosen Porträts, von John F. Kennedy oder Mick Jagger etwa, noch die Gewalt aus jeder fotorealistischen Pore dringt.

- The Los Angeles Opera's much-anticipated new production of Strauss's "Rosenkavalier" opened on Sunday night at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and you can bet that the high-concept and boldly stylized sets and costumes by the designer and visual artist Gottfried Helnwein are going to provoke the strongest reactions. Restraint was not a hallmark of the outlandishly captivating production. In a detailed program note, Helnwein writes that the era of Maria Theresa was a time when everything was theater, at least for the upper class, and that over-the-top fashion styles often included masks and white-face. His designs combine spartan sets with wildly extravagant costumes ranging in style from the surreal to the ridiculous. Act I is bathed in shades of blue. In their stiffly modern blue suits and blue-faced makeup, the Marschallin's notaries look like the members of Blue Man Group. In Act II, the mansion of Herr von Faninal, a wealthy commoner with aristocratic pretensions, glows with garish golden yellows. Faninal's servants could be creatures from "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," no doubt an intentional evocation: the production begins with projected scenes from Robert Wiene's 1926 silent film adaptation of "Der Rosenkavalier," and Wiene also directed "Caligari." In any event, the cast seemed empowered by the production.

Helnwein: Ich hatte den Eindruck er hatte ein ehrliches Interesse, Kindern zu helfen. Er wollte alle Waisenheime und Kinderkrankenhäuser sehen. Wenn wir bei einem Krankenhaus ankamen, standen die Ärzte und Schwestern Spalier -, und er wollte die schlimmsten Fälle sehen. Ein Kind wurde ihm gezeigt, das ganz grün war und an einer schweren Leberkrankheit litt. Er saß eine Stunde lang an seinem Bett, hielt es in den Armen und streichelte es. Und als er erfuhr, dass kein Geld für die lebensrettende Transplantation vorhanden sei, gab er seinen Leuten den Auftrag die besten internationalen Spezialisten ausfindig zu machen und versprach die Kosten zu übernehmen.

Anderseits ist es Manson aufgrund dieses Geräts kaum möglich zu sprechen, sein Mund ist zu einem andauernden Schrei entstellt, was wiederum als Anspielung auf die Unterdrückung freier Meinungsäusserung und ein Redeverbot zu verstehen wäre. Zweifelsohne lehnen sich diese Einstellungen an die Selbstportraitfotografien des österreichischen Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein an. Die Ähnlichkeit der Nahaufnahme Mansons mit Mundklammer mit den drei Werken Helnweins aus der Reihe 'Der Untermensch II' mit den Titeln "Self-Portrait' (1987), The last Days of Pompeij (1987) oder auch 'Song of Deputies'(1986), auf denen Helnwein selbst mit bandagiertem Kopf und einer ähnlichen Mundklammer abgebildet ist, ist frappierend. Der durch Klammern zum Schrei aufgerissene Mund ist ein durchgängiges Motiv in Helnweins Selbstportraitarbeiten, die immer auch politisch motiviert waren. Für Helnwein ist der Schrei gleichbedeutend mit dem Aufbegehren eines menschen gegen Unterdrückung.

Wiesbaden/Tel Aviv. Israel bei den Maifestspielen in Wiesbaden. Das Ensemble zeigte am Freitag die verstörende und phantasievolle Oper „The Child Dreams“ (Das Kind träumt) nach einem Theaterstück von Hanoch Levin, einem bekannten israelischen Dramatiker. Bühne und Kostüme entwarf der Künstler Gottfried Helnwein, entsprechend ausdrucksstark und atemberaubend sind die Kulissen und Bilder. Die Oper erzählt eine visionäre Allegorie über Kinderschicksale in einer Welt zwischen Krieg, Zerstörung, Emigration und der Sehnsucht nach Frieden. Es ist eine Odyssee aus der Sicht eines Kindes...

The portraits of Hendrix, Joplin, and Lennon are particulary stirring because their ghostlike treatment translates as a poetic and humble tribute to major creative forces whose lives were tragically cut short. As exemplified by the paintings of Helnwein, the purpose of a contemporary rock and roll portrait may extend well beyond biographical signification to stimulating reflection upon larger issues of social or political consequence.

Wenn eine Steigerung möglich ist, gelingt sie Kresnik, im Frühjahr 1988, mit seinem nächsten Stück: Macbeth. Natürlich erzählt Kresniks Choreographisches Theater die blutgetränkte Fabel Shakespeares nicht einfach nach. Es hat sich einiger Motive bemächtigt die es wieder und wieder repetiert, in großaufgerissenen, heftig blutenden Bildern und verstörten, irrsinnigen Aktionen, denen der Kresnik geistesverwandte Wiener Maler Gottfried Helnwein als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner lediglich drei Farben gegeben hat: das Schwarz des Todes, das Weiß der Schlachthofwände und Leichentücher und das Rot des Blutes. Das Drama von Königsmord und Wahnsinn erscheint bei Kresnik wie durch den Fleischwolf gedreht: ein Hackstück, roh und triefend von Blut. Bis kurz vor Schluß der Aufführung gibt es keinerlei Entwicklung; nur Ansichten und Variationen von Tod, Mord und Irresein, umgesetzt in bohrende Bilder und verstörende Aktionen. Die Welt als Schlachthaus, abendfüllend und ohne Perspektivenwechsel, ohne Hoffnungsschimmer. Die Figuren heißen zwar "Banquo", "Duncan", "Macbeth" und "Macduff" samt zugehörigen Ladies; auch die drei Hexen, die mit ihren Einflüsterungen die originale Tragödie erst in Gang setzen, sind vorhanden als Mischung aus BDM-Mädchen, Militärpolizistinnen und Go-go-Girls: hübsche Harpyien des Grauens, die das monogam in sich kreisende, mit Blut geschmierte Geschehen antreiben und kontrollieren.

MTV: Sigismondi and Bowie both acknowledge lifting the imagery in his "Dead Man Walking" video from the work of the English painter Francis Bacon. The look of Floria's most noted video to date, though, [QuickTime,1 MB] "Beautiful People," although it owes a debt to Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein, was pretty much the inspiration of the artist, Marilyn Manson. KURT: The new wave of rock-video grotesquerie isn't new at all, actually, the Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein, whose self-portrait adorned the cover of an album by the German band Scorpions some years back, was doing images of medical horror twenty years ago, and no one in rock has gone as far down the road to happy depravity as photographer Joel Peter Witkin, whose deeply disturbing work, which you might best seek out on your own is much admired by Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor, no slouch at images of icky sickness himself.

Andy invited me to the factory in New York 1983 and after the usual compliments how he loved my work and so on, he asked me to follow him into an empty room where we sat down opposite to each other and he just froze and he didn't say anything and he didn't move. We sat in silence for some time and I didn't know what to do - at first it was strange and it felt kind of awkward, but then slowly everything started to transcend and the tension dissipated and nothing seemed important anymore. Bonn. Finstere Mächte dominieren den ersten Akt von Johann Kresniks Ring -Projekt, für das Gottfried Helnwein Bühne und Kostüme konzipiert hat. In Hamburg schockten Helnwein und Kresnik mit Bildern des gemeuchelten Pasolini. Stuttgart verstörte das Duo mit der aus dem Lot geratenen Bühne für Peter Weiss` "Verfolgung und Ermordung des Jean Paul Marat..." und wiederum einem heftigen Plakat: Lafontaines Kopf in der Blutlache, Titel: "Das Attentat". Wenn jetzt Kresnik und Helnwein in Bonn Richard Wagners "Ring des Nibelungen" in Tanz- und Bildtheater umsetzen, steht erneut ein Helnwein-Plakat am Anfang: Wieder ein Kopf, der im Blut liegt, diesmal ein Kind in Uniform, buchstäblich erschlagen von einer Kaskade von Euro-Münzen. Die Botschaft ist klar und radikal: Die perverse Macht des Geldes als Triebfeder der Politik.

Vor Jahren war Robert Wilson mit seiner Interpretation der HAMLETMASCHINE zu den Berliner Festwochen eingeladen. Wilson bezwang den Text durch überstilisierten Ästhetizismus. Die Kritik feierte seinen Formalismus und sein Lichtdesign. Das Westberliner Schaubühnenpublikum (die Mauer stand damals noch) war begeistert von Wilsons gestylten Standbildern und seinem designten Licht. Den Urschrei in der HAMLETMASCHINE verspürte keiner. Diese HAMLETMASCHINE beunruhigte keinen. Fastfood für Intellektuelle, ohne Kanten und Tiefe, ohne die Wut des Autors. Ein schöngeistiger Event, ohne den zerrissenen Background der Entstehungsgeschichte, ohne den "Ruf nach mehr Freiheit" aus dem "der Schrei nach dem Sturz der Regierung wird". Das beruhigende dieser HAMLETMASCHINE war, daß sie nichts wollte, außer anders sein. Nun wieder HAMLETMASCHINE; die Mauer gibt es nicht mehr, die Berliner Festwochen immer noch, Robert Wilson ist Weltstar geworden und noch harmloser als er schon immer war. Schon im Vorfeld löste diese Münchner Produktion Unruhe und Bewegung aus. Grund war ein Bild, "Epiphanie", des Wiener "Blut und Schockmalers" Gottfried Helnwein, Teil seines Bühnenbildes für die Münchner HAMLETMASCHINE. Die Witwe eines auf dem Helnwein-Gemälde abgebildeten SS-Offiziers versuchte in München gegen das Bild eine einstweilige Verfügung zu erwirken, der nicht stattgegeben wurde. Aufgrund von verschiedenen Bürgerinitiativen in Berlin verboten die "Berliner Festwochen" eines der beiden Plakate von Gottfried Helnwein um ihr "Highlight" HAMLETMASCHINE "nicht zu gefährden". Auf dem Plakat ist das Opfer einer Gewalttat zu sehen, ein 10-jähriges Mädchen. Noch bevor die Inszenierung in Berlin zu sehen war beschäftigten sich Medien, Bürger, Politiker und Rechtsanwälte damit.

Flimm gewann für Bühne und Kostüme Gottfried Helnwein, der angeblich notorisch Drastik und Provokation sucht, zunächst aber ein ingeniöser Bildmacher ist. ein Maler, Grafiker und Fotograf. Das verbindet ihn mit William Hogarth, dem englischen Kupferstecher, dessen Bilderzyklen Strawinsky zur Oper inspirierten. Doch 250 Jahre später setzt Helnwein nicht bei Hogarth und seiner realistisch genauen Darstellung der Londoner Casinos, Lusthöllen und Irrenhäuser an. Helnwein arrangiert eine magische Zeitlosigkeit durch präzise Rekostruktion konkreter Stile und zugleich fantasiegeborener Kreationen. Selten erlebte man die plastische Wirkungskraft von Kostümen so intensiv wie in Helnweins schiefem, nach rechts sich neigendem Kubusraum, in den zur Linken drei Türen eingelassen sind und dessen hellweisse Flächen immer wieder Bildprojektionen dienen, Kostüme und Bilder sind von ausgesuchtem Antipsychologismus, von entwaffnend stereotyper Symbolik, so wie Audens und Kallmans Text, wie Strawinskys Musik.

Der als Fotorealist bekanntgewordene Wiener Künstler Gottfried Helnwein schuf das Bühnenbild zu Kresniks Inszenierung. "Meine Bildideen scheitern oft and der Zweidimensionalität, fürs Theater kann ich vom Make-up übers Bühnenbild bis zum Plakat alles entwerfen, das kommt meinen künstlerischen Vorstellungen am nächsten." Seine Ideen schufen den Akteuren anfangs grosse Probleme. Er entwarf als Bühne eine Schräge, im 60-Grad-Winkel, für die man die Schauspieler eigentlich hätte anseilen müssen, und flachte sie dann auf 26 Grad ab. " Aber die Schauspieler sind immer noch ziemlich ausser Atem."

Ein Gesicht wie eine Landschaft, um den abgegriffenen Topos neu zu verwenden, ein Gesicht, in dem sich die gesamte Geschichte des Rock’n Roll wiederspielt. Wenn Helnwein von seinen Beziehungen zu den Aufnahmen spricht, merkt man etwas von der unmittelbaren Authentizität, die diesen Fotos eigen ist. Er berichtet, daß der Anfang seiner Fotografie darin begründet liegt, daß er mit den Fotos der anderen Fotografen immer unzufrieden war.

Daß Gottfried Helnwein, auch so ein Übriggebliebener aus schöneren Skandaljahrzehnten, die Rammstein-Fratzen auf der CD-Hülle mit seinen bekannten Kopfbandagen und Hannibal-the-Cannibal-Maulkörben verzieren darf, ist nur die folgerichtige Konsequenz.

In a society fluent in the language of news media it's almost impossible not to interpret the blank face of Gottfried Helnwein's photo Child1: it becomes a symbol of lost innocence and silent accusation. The show this image promotes, Close Your Little Eyes, is a music theatre-installation devised by composer and director Max Lyandvert. Taking as its starting point a lullaby from the Vilnius Ghetto, it juxtaposes visual and sound images with music scored for 16-voice children's choir, string quartet and soprano soloist.

Jürgen Flimm über seine Operninszenierung "The Rake's Progress" und die Lage der Hamburger Theater Kein Plakat kündigt bisher die Staatsopern-Premiere von Igor Strawinskys "The Rake's Progress" an. Ungewöhnlich diskret für ein Ereignis, das bereits am kommenden Sonntag stattfindet. Zumal wenn Gottfried Helnwein, seit seinen provozierenden Plakaten zu "Lulu", "Andi" und "Pasolini" für das Deutsche Schauspielhaus in Hamburg berühmt und berüchtigt, der Bühnen- und Kostümbildner ist. Und immerhin inszeniert Jürgen Flimm, Ex-Intendant des Thalia Theaters, erstmals nach 20 Jahren wieder am hiesigen Opernhaus. Für die WELT sprach Monika Nellissen mit Jürgen Flimm über seine Inszenierung. DIE WELT: Wie sind Sie auf die Idee gekommen, mit Herrn Helnwein zusammenzuarbeiten? Jürgen Flimm: Wir haben uns auf einer Geburtstagsfeier in Wien kennen gelernt und nett unterhalten. Da kam mir die Idee, dass er, wenn ich hier "The Rake's Progress" inszeniere, das Bühnenbild machen sollte, weil er extrem auf die Leute gucken kann.

"This album is about expression. The imagination and personality of the individual cannot be trapped by small minds or defined by any one person. The genious of arts finds sanctuary among children and madmen to survive. That is who we are." Marilyn Manson has collaborated with Gottfried helnwein for the album's artwork which is part of a greater series that will be published in a book and exhibited in museums across the world.

Marilyn Manson takes his inspiration from the glamour of 1930s Hollywood, the grotesque of Vaudeville to the height of cabaret decadence and so-called "degenerate" art in Weimar Berlin before its deconstruction.

"Kids and guns is a big issue in society today, especially in America," explains Helnwein," One aspect of these pictures refers to the Columbine High School shootings, when Manson was blamed. And now the whole country is going to war. America worships guns. Every day you hear of child abuse. There are these cases with the Roman Catholic church. We're living in a crazy society. I believe a true artist will always reflect the state society is in."

Manson collaborated on the album artwork with artist Gottfried Helnwein. Plans are afoot for their work to be exhibited in museums worldwide at some point in the future.

Helnwein has attracted controversy in the field of visual arts because of his bold references to, amongst other things, Nazi imagery and the holocaust. Writing on his official website, Manson said he his to undertake a "multi-media-prop chaos" project with Helnwein, which he thinks will "please many and enrage more". However, he was unwilling to give full details. In recent weeks Manson has taken time out from recording his new album 'The Golden Age Of Grotesque', and flown back to New York to complete his scenes for the film 'Party Monster', in which is has a part.

In Helnweins Bildergeschichte macht sie ihrem Namen Ehre mit einem Donald Duck auf dem Kopf.

Mit seinem aktuellen Album „The Golden Age Of Grotesque“ hat Marilyn Manson mit seiner gleichnamigen Band einen weiteren, künstlerischen Schritt gewagt. Beeinflusst und inspiriert wurde der Sänger, Maler und Prediger Marilyn Manson während seiner Arbeit an der Lyrik durch die Epoche der Groteske. Die von den Nazis verbotene Kunstrichtung aus dem ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts paarte Manson mit einer provokant in Szene gesetzten Leni-Riefenstahl-Ästhetik. Unterstützt wurde er beim Design der Show von Österreichs Ausnahmekünstler Gottfried Helnwein, der einen nicht unwesentlichen Beitrag zur visuellen Umsetzung der Manson-Groteske beisteuerte. Eine überdimensionale von Helnwein gestaltete Büste des Schock-Rockers zierte bei „Fight Song“ die Bühne, auf dem Kopf zwei Mickey-Maus-Ohren, die gleichen, die auch das Haupt des Sängers zierten. Zur Einstimmung sah man zunächst einmal Halbwüchsige in HJ-Uniform mit Kopfverband und Mickey-Mouse-Ohren mechanisch durch die Volksbühne marschieren, von links nach rechts und dann wieder zurück. Dabei zogen sie auch stets an der Kunst vorbei, die in den Vorräumen zum Bestaunen an die Wände gehängt worden war. Auf der einen Seite präsentierte Marilyn Manson seine Aquarelle; lustige, kleine, bunte Bilder, die in der Regel Menschen und Tiere zeigten, denen es nicht ganz so gut ging. Manche lächelten irre, anderen fehlten entscheidende Körperteile. Auf der anderen Seite sah man die großformatigen Manson-Porträts des Fotorealisten Gottfried Helnwein. Darauf war Manson mal mit Zylinder, mal mit Mickey-Mouse-Ohren zu sehen. Vor den Bildern hatte sich ein Kamerateam des Musiksenders MTV aufgebaut und interviewte gerade die Bundestagsvizepräsidentin Antje Vollmer. Frage an Frau Vollmer: "Spüren Sie eine Seelenverwandtschaft?"

Ihre Bilder erzählen von Deformation und Einsamkeit. Auf der Bühne hingen gestern riesige Gemälde, die Sie mit Micky-Maus-Ohren zeigen. Der österreichische Künstler Gottfried Helnwein hat sie angefertigt. Manson: "Ein Meister!"

We’re going to display collaborative work I’ve done with artist Gottfried Helnwein- large multimedia images. There is my painting. Auf den Gängen des Foyers marschieren zehn Menschlein in Braunhemden auf und ab - ihre Gesichter sind mit Mullbinden maskiert, sie drücken beim Gleichschritt die Knie durch, als hätten sie Platinplatten in den Gelenken, reagieren nicht auf Ansprache, folgt man ihnen aber, so gelangt man in einen anderen Teil des Foyers. Hier hängen übergroße Fotos Marilyn Mansons von Gottfried Helnwein, noch so ein Ästhet des Schreckens. Manson mit der obligatorischen Helnwein-Zahnspange, Manson als drogenabhängige Mutter, Manson mit runden schwarzen Ohren, den Ohren von Mickey Mouse, dem Symbol für amerikanisches Pflichtbewusstsein schlechthin. Plötzlich steht Marilyn Manson mit Gottfried Helnwein vor den Bildern, und Antje Vollmer gesellt sich dazu. Auf erstauntes Nachfragen sagt sie, es habe sie einfach mal interessiert, das seien ja exzellente Bilder.

Der ehemalige Fotojournalist Brian Warner, der 1989 beschloss, sich in Marilyn Manson umzubenennen und sich hierfür Teile der Namen von Marilyn Monroe und Charles Manson borgte, kehrt mit dem Longplayer The Golden Age Of Grotesque in gewohnter Shocking-Manier in den Rockzirkus zurück. M magazine traf Manson und den österreichischen Künstler Gottfried Helnwein, der mit ihm das kontroverse Artwork des neuen Albums kreierte, in der Berliner Volksbühne. Begleitet wurde die Albumpräsentation der anderen Art von zwei Ausstellungen. In einer zeigte der aus Florida stammende Manson seine Malereien, die zweite widmete sich dem Album-Artwork, für das Helnwein verantwortlich zeichnet. Diese wird in Folge auch als Ausstellung um den Globus wandern und dabei auch in Wien Halt machen.

Щербаков Кому-то Готтфрид Хельнвайн покажется просто ужасным, кому-то любопытным, кому-то отвратительным, кто-то просто офигеет, кому-то очень понравится, но факт заключается в том, что этот график/ художник/ дизайнер не оставит равнодушным никого. Большинство людей, которым я всучивал в руки альбом Хельнвайна, реагировали остро негативно, мол, это не искусство, он психопат и маньяк недоделанный, это нельзя никому показывать и т.п. Вспомните Босха! Всеми уважаемый художник, классик. Его работы до сих пор используются в декорациях театров, на концертах различных групп, в том числе группами "Depeche Mode", "U2" и т.д. и т.п. А он (Босх) разве не ужас? Пожирание людей, пронзенные струнами арфы спины, отрывания конечностей, уроды и прочее сему подобное... Вот, блин, гуманист-христианин нашелся! Я тоже люблю живопись Босха, возможно это один из самых моих любимых художников, но все же... А Кукрыниксы с их красными носатыми мужиками, которые штыками протыкают черепные коробки Гитлеров? А Дюрер с отсеченными головами и лужами крови? А Караваджо с его бесконечными трупами? (Кстати, один из автопортретов Хельнвайна использовала группа "Scorpions" для оформления обложки своего альбома "Blackout".)

KURIER: Was verbindet Sie mit Marilyn Manson? GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN: Ich glaube, dass wir beide nicht einzuordnen sind. Der Manson ist ja einer, der über das Klischee des Rockmusikers hinausgeht, der hervorragende Performancekunst macht, sehr gut mit visuellen Dingen arbeitet und ausgezeichnet schreibt.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland challenged renowned artists to make imaginary album covers for their favorite musicians. The exhibit, on display at the Rock Hall through the fall, includes cover art for everyone from Dylan to Tupac, the Kinks to Foo Fighters. Austrian multimedia artist Gottfried Helnwein worked with Manson to create this piece. "You can have many Interpretations of the relationship between Manson and the Child", says Helnwein. "I think the contrast is nice."

Hinzu kam die Zusammenarbeit mit dem österreichischen Künstler Gottfried Helnwein. Der Maler und Fotograf hatte bereits 1982 in der Musikszene von sich reden gemacht, als er das Cover legendäre Cover für das Scorpions-Album "Blackout" lieferte. Vi cito solo Marilyn Manson per Golden Age of Grotesque e Rammstein per Sehnsucht per quanto riguarda la musica, direttore fotografico e costumista teatrale affermato e in alcuni famosissimi film tra cui un Pasolini e altri grandi del cinema e del teatro tedesco e mondiale. Ma non sono di certo le sue più grandi opere...vi basti pensare le sue innumerevoli gallerie ritrattistiche e il museo a lui dedicato.... Ovviamente un arte ricercata e "orrida" che colpisce lo spettatore nel profondo, lo trapana e lo sconvolge. In qualcosa potremme travisare i tratti di Giger (nei dipinti su tela magari..) ma è senza dubbio nella fotografia la parte più innovativa e interessante dell'eclettico maestro... Un pò come la Sigismondi..i richiami sembrano moltiplicarsi man mano che si guardano le sue opere...sono artisti affini e dai tratti e dalla sensibilità intrecciate fra loro.

Jahrhunderts, der Dritte im Bunde hat mit seinen hyperrealistischen, plakativen Werken Furore gemacht. Flimm hat gemeinsam mit Helnwein, der auch die witzigen, farcenhaft übersteigerten Kostüme entworfen hat, am Bühnenbild gefeilt. "Die kleine Bühne macht die Figuren sehr stark. Und passend zu dem plakativen Stück hat Helnwein großformatig Videos und Dias mit Großstadtszenen und verzerrten Gesichtern in dem Raum projiziert."

Je ne connaissais pas l’oeuvre de John Ruskin et suis surpris par l’importance de ses écrits et de ses travaux. J’ai été impressionné par le travail des Surréalistes en premier lieu, puis par des gens comme Hans Bellmer, Unica Zürn, Henri Michaux, Gabrielle Wittkop, Antonin Artaud, Sade, mais aussi par Giger, Helnwein et bien sûr Witkin. J’étais très curieux de cinéma expérimental et bizarre (Arrabal, Jodorowski, Bunuel et plus tard, Greeneway, entre autres...). Éliane m’a fait découvrir récemment des peintres Symbolistes qui ont sans doute indirectement influencé mon travail pour InHuman.

Juli 2004 in Düsseldorf als Brückenschlag zwischen Tradition und Moderne, historischer Aufführungspraxis und aktuellen Klangadaptionen.

...Eine gelungene Annäherung ist aber dennoch daraus geworden. Der Tänzer und Choreograf Gregor Seyffert hat dafür zusammen mit dem österreichischen Rundum-Künstler Gottfried Helnwein in die Kuppel der Tonhalle einen Riesenreif gehängt, der die Anmutung eines überdimensionalen Heiligenscheins hat... Die beiden Künstler fanden in dem mehr als 150 Jahre alten Stück einen Ausgangspunkt ihrer Ästhetik: Seyffert als Tänzer des Androgynen. Und noch deutlicher Gottfried Helnwein, der seine Blut- und Binden-Phantasmen auf der Bühne und auf breitformatigen Videoeinspielungen auslebt - und sich in Schumanns exaltiert-nazarenischem Opus vermutlich ganz wie zu Hause in seiner katholischen Kindheit fühlt. Die teils erstklassigen Gesangssolisten geraten bei diesem Mysterien-Spektakel ein bisschen in den Hintergrund. Aber, wie gesagt, bei diesem Schumann-Werk ist das vielleicht sogar besser so.

Während die Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, der Städtische Musikverein zu Düsseldorf und die Gesangssolisten unter der Leitung von GMD John Fiore eine wackere Aufführung auf die Beine stellen, kommentieren Seyffert, der auch die Tanz-Rolle der Peri übernimmt, und der Bildkünstler Gottfried Helnwein das Geschehen mit kraftvollen, teils verstörenden Szenen. Die Tonhallen-Kuppel dient als Himmelssphäre, das überbaute Parkett wird zur Menschenbühne. Ein illuminierbarer weißer Reifen ist Wolkenloch und Himmelspforte, auf dessen Rand Edens Wächter die Stellung halten. Über eine Videoleinwand hinter dem kostümierten und maskierten Chor flimmern Helnweins stilisierte, teils surreale Bilder. Blut fließt, rinnt oder spritzt, nicht aber wie beim Massaker, sondern als abstrakte rote Flüssigkeit. Es quillt auch aus zwei im Kuss vereinten Kindermündern.

Mit der szenischen Inszenierung des Oratoriums "Das Paradies und die Peri" erwartet das Publikum heute einen glanzvollen Höhepunkt des 8. Düsseldorfer Schumannfestes. Unter der künstlerischen Leitung des Startänzers Gregor Seyffert und der Ausstattung des Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein entsteht eine faszinierende Deutung des 1843 komponierten Werkes.

Cover waren und sind mehr als lustige Verpackung. Sie sind Kunst. Die Pop-Art Peter Blakes für "Sgt. Pepper" von den Beatles. Andy Warhols schlüpfrige Banane (Velvet Underground) oder der einladende Jeansstall (Rolling Stones). Cal Schenkel illustrierte (Zappa), Robert Crumb schraffierte (Joplin), Gottfried Helnwein schockte (Rammstein), Malcolm McLaren dilettierte (Sex Pistols).

We really like his attitude towards art and the way he showed us. It turned out that a band picture can be something different, a real art, and not just another common, boring shot of a few people.

Contrary to what his critics may believe, Manson in no way supports Hitler or Nazism. Not only is it "impossible to be fascist when you're into fashion," but the very nature of Hitler's rise to power sounded a death knell to the very art movements that Manson was inspired by. The final track on The Golden Age of Grotesque, Obsequey (the Death of Art) and the painting by the same name, demonstrates how fervidly anti-Hitler Manson really is. The painting shows the dome of Berlin burning, a direct result of Hitler becoming chancellor. According to Manson in an interview with NY Rock, "Hitler tried to define art and outlawed some of it by calling it degenerated and decadent. Hitler imposed his will and banned art he considered immoral. I'm not sure if the people who adopt those phrases and try to ban my art are aware of the implications they carry." Interestingly enough, when the same outfit was used in the mOBSCENE video, the insignia was missing. Of course, the time period for that song was exclusively Weimar Berlin, before the Nazi takeover. The outfit was also similar to that worn by Marlene Dietrich in the film Seven Sinners Helnwein's 'Album Covers that Never Were' ... Some of Manson's other wardrobe is reminiscent of Nazi dress as well. In the series, Album Covers that Never Were, (Manson's record company deemed the photographs too risque to be used for the cover) in which Manson collaborated with Gottfried Helnwein, he wore a typical Nazi officer's cap. The same outfit was used when Manson posed for the cover of Metal Hammer. He dressed in Nazi regalia, clutching a gun as a young girl looked on. His expression, however, again shows exactly how he feels about the Nazi movement.

Typisch ist auch dafür der Streit zwischen August Everding und Wolfgang Sawallisch um die Bayrische Staatsoper. Dieser Zwist hat nun eine bemerkenswerte Teiltransplantation erfahren. Diesmal heißen nämlich die Kombattanten nicht Everding und Sawallisch, sondern Sawallisch steht nun ein ganzes Künstlerquintett gegenüber: der Choreograph Hans Kresnik, der Maler Gottfried Helnwein, der Schriftsteller Gerd Jonke und der Tänzer Ismael Ivo sowie ein nicht namentlich genannter "Lichtdesigner der Rockmusikszene" - wobei Kresnik und Helnwein als die Hauptwidersacher dastehen. Ob Kresnik- Helnweins "Trionfi" den Segen der Orffianer gefunden hätte, ist sekundär gegenüber der Tatsache, dass man wissen muss, worauf man sich einlässt. Ein leider gänzlich fiktives Beispiel mag dies belegen: Käme ein Opernintendant, gar ein Festspielleiter auf die Idee, den amerikanischen Rocksänger und "Down by Law"- Schauspieler Tom Waits als Don Giovanni zu verpflichten, dann verhieße eben dies raueste, knurrendste Originalität eines unbehausten Vokalwüstlings. Sich dann über mangelnde Probenadrettheit und ungenügende Belcanto- Geschmeidigkeit zu beklagen, zeugt vom Mangel an Realismus. Konzeptionslosigkeit hat also nicht die Bayrische Staatsoper Kresnik und Helnwein anzulasten, sondern der Vorwurf fällt auf die großmächtige Institution zurück.

In der "Trionfi"-Affäre der Bayrischen Staatsoper, die dem engagierten Produktionsteam Kresnik/Helnwein den Laufpass gab und damit die geplante Festspielpremiere Anfang Juli gefährdete( siehe SZ vom 23.03), hatten sich die Herren Kresnik und Helnwein in kritischen Erwiderungen zu Wort gemeldet.

München, 27.März Opern-Krach in München, 2.Teil: Jetzt schießen der entlassene Ausstatter Gottfried Helnwein und der Regisseur und Choreograph Johann Kresnik, denen Operndirektor Wolfgang Sawallisch "Konzeptionslosigkeit" vorgeworfen hat, zurück.

Kresnik : "Es ist schade um die Arbeit, die angefangen vom Bühnenbild und dem Beleuchtungskonzept völlig klar und durchdacht war." Helnwein verwies in seiner Stellungnahme darauf, dass von ihm seit 1989 ein komplettes, maßstabgetreues Modell mit allen dazugehörigen Zeichnungen vorliege. Die Einzelheiten seien mit dem technisch Verantwortlichen besprochen worden, einer der besten Lichtdesigner der Rockmusikszene habe ein Beleuchtungskonzept mit über 250 computergesteuerten Scheinwerfern mit drei großen Videoleinwänden erarbeitet. Zu seiner Vorlage mit Ausschnitten aus Bekleidungskatalogen als Grundlage für die Kostüme, die Sawallisch als Missachtung des künstlerischen Anspruchs der Oper zurück gewiesen hatte, sagte Helnwein: "Dass meine Trivial-Collagen imstande waren, Herrn Sawallisch in eine schwere Krise zu stürzen, zeigt nur, dass er die Kunstgeschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts mit Readymade, Dada, Warhol und Beuys verschlafen hat."

Alle Beteiligten gingen mit Akribie an die Arbeit. Sie verbanden, unter der Leitung von GMD John Fiore, die wunderbare Musik Robert Schumanns mit einer von Gregor Seyffert und Gottfried Helnwein großartigen szenischen Umsetzung des Textes von Thomas Moore. In fünf Aufführungen fanden sich mehr als 6.000 begeisterte Zuhörer und Zuschauer in der Tonhalle ein. Den Beifall des Publikums konnte man an jedem Abend „frenetisch“ nennen.

In Richard Strauss' opera, aging aristocrat Marschallin beds the young Octavian. But Octavian's a mezzo-soprano, played by a lady in what opera calls a "trouser role." Helnwein just took the trousers out. In the ad, the women's expressions are tender and their lips mere millimeters apart. Helnwein isn't surprised by the scuttlebutt in the normally staid opera world. "I'm used to it," Helnwein said. "It always happens with my work. I don't intend it really, but it happens. I think it has to do with the fact that middle class people usually don't want anything to change. If it could, everything would freeze and stay the same way forever. But artists are very annoying, disturbing guys. They always want to change and mess something up.

Doppelherz. Double Heart, if I’m not mistaken. Gottfried Helnwein, controversial German artist, had a part in this, and it seems pseudo-planned, but mostly stoned/wasted/drunk candid shots in the creepiest locations and situations to have ever existed. The soundtrack consists of Thaeter being played over and over and over (for 26 minutes, the length of this film) and stilted, monotonous, broken words being stumbled through on top of this. A note at the end of the film leaves us to believe these words may have been intended as a vocal suicide note from Manson. Words like “I’m a canvas that bleeds and I’m painted with fingers”, “everything in this world has already been created so we can only dream up new ways of destroying them,” and “I want downloadable suicide” repeated over and over and over, twisted themselves and their speaker. You can hear as his voice breaks, as he can’t quite say the words he’s trying to say, as he sniffs and is maybe even crying. Just the noises are enough to knock me senseless, before letting me go cower in the corner. The images... It’s like David Lynch directed it, only even David Lynch would be more merciful. If you’re a fan of Manson for the music, don’t bother with the DVD edition, you’re just going to be scared off. If you appreciate scary, disturbing art flicks that destroy your mind, then maybe you’re almost prepared. I want to say it doesn’t make sense, but it would be a lie. There’s almost a plot, it’s just all broken in pieces, fixated on the oddest images. There are two basic processions spliced together as Manson drones his bitter words in a tired voice.

For the last several months, Downtown-based artist Gottfried Helnwein has switched back and forth between two realities. In his Arts District studio, he works on material to fill gallery and museum shows booked into 2008, all over the world. Then he steps out into the sunlight, chats in several languages to several friends at a coffee shop on Traction Avenue, and walks to the Los Angeles Opera's costume shop on Alameda Street. Schell's collaborators are conductor Kent Nagano and artist Gottfried Helnwein, whose décors mingle contemporary elements — there's an office chair on rollers that the oafish Baron Ochs uses to skitter around in — with the Baroque and Rococo earmarks of the era in which the opera is set, the reign of Maria Theresa. Even before the opening, however, this collaboration has created something of a stir. Helnwein's eye-catching poster features a close-up of two gorgeous bare-shouldered women just barely kissing — which, technically, captures the opening love scene between the Marschallin and the young nobleman she's involved with, Octavian, who in time-honored "trouser" fashion is played by a mezzo-soprano. "I was trying to get to the work's essence," says Helnwein, now an Angeleno relocated from Vienna. "Two beautiful young people in a tender, magical love scene." But the photo illustration also suggests "lipstick lesbians" — not exactly what Strauss and Hofmannsthal had in mind.

Marie Antoinette, for example, was obsessed with the idea of pretending to be a simple innocent peasant girl. Her husband built her an entire life-sized fantasy farmhouse and mill with sheep, shepherds and all - and an idealistic landscape shaped around it. Visuals that can overpower the delicate text and even occasionally seem at odds with the glittery, enrapturing music but that nonetheless are strikingly provocative in a museum-installation kind of way. Call the look postmodern Baroque, a kind of cool Fellini-esque phantasmagoria, done as artsy chic and maximized by Alan Burrett’s ingenious lighting. The outer acts have a single-hue, ghostly wash, with one or several of the central characters in blazing color from head to toe as stark contrast. The second act is a peachy gold, no spectral downside. Yes, it will offend the traditionalists – those who look for straightforward 18th-century effects.

Along with direction by cinema great Maximilian Schell, this original go at Richard Strauss’ opera of the young rose-bearer was designed by Viennese visual virtuoso Gottfried Helnwein. The team has created a surrealist environment undefined by any specific time or place. Visually, characters range from over the top froo-froo to contemporary, with nightmarish interpretations of Venetian masqueraders and creeping minions of the lecherous Lerchenau in between. Each act is bathed in its own primary color suited to the general feeling as if you’re watching through a giant mood ring.

The 21st century artist Gottfried Helnwein has succeeded for many of the same reasons as Strauss, and you would think he'd be the perfect man to design new sets and costumes for Rosenkavalier. In his Downtown Los Angeles studio, Helnwein paints photorealistic portraits of beautiful women, innocent children and Irish landscapes, then undercuts it with grotesque images of the damaged and the misbegotten. His theater design follows the same lead. Like Strauss, Helnwein's art is strangely populist at the same time it revels in morbid undertones. The marriage is a happy one: Helnwein plays with a monochromatic canvas (each act has its own color, including face paint); has fun with big, cartoonish Alice-in-Wonderland costumes; and does sometimes hint at the decadent underbelly of the work.

Seine Modernisierung ist nostalgisch, ein Farbenfest, zuweilen merkwürdig anklingend; ohne aber je dem traditionellen Rahmen zu entfallen.

Steeped in Austrian visual art, his motto declares: “Art must excite, amaze or shock, startle, or inspire.” Indeed, he does in this work. Each act is tailored to a symbolic color scheme: Act I, blue-expectation/morning, Act II, gold and yellow-neuvo riche, and Act III, red-love, hate, revolution. Over 200 costumes are required in this performance since many of the principals appearing in each act require three (or perhaps more, such a Octavian) different colored outfits and make-up. The different shades of primary colors (palette of the Rococo Era) came to life in these rather stark sets, yet this is exactly the key to Helnwein’s artistic success: reducing visual means, and enhancing a stronger message. The intrinsic value of colors becomes more apparent, and yields a deeper impact on one’s subconscious.

When the curtain rose, it was on a gorgeous blue set by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein. Each of the three acts was in a primary color, and the characters were costumed in a mixture of 18th-century, modern and Disney cartoon attire. Film director Maximilian Schell, extending his realm to opera direction, staged this masterpiece with a perfect balance of respect and originality, emphasizing the emotional interactions among the principal characters.

But no, from the opening in a bedroom furnished not in period fustian but in bare walls magically drenched in Alan Burrett’s saturated lighting, to the glorious overstatement of the look of the Baron himself, who seems costumed in neon, to the Marschallin’s final entrance, when the flush of her face seems to have drained into the unsexed blue of her gown, this is a story told in color and transformed — by the design genius of Gottfried Helnwein — into a Rosenkavalier freshly renewed.

The von Faninal Palace set for Act II was an absolutely astounding use of space. Almost all of the characters entered from the sides of the stage, at least two stories high. They descended to ground level by use of a two huge curved staircases which come together at the top. All around on the second floor is a chest high balustrade and the entire structure is supported by a series of columns which go through the second floor and continue upwards from there. The structure was in white, but lighting designer Alan Burrett bathed the entire scene in a “daylight” type gel. Because of the elaborateness of the set for Act II (and the time required to “build” it and then break it down again), the sets for Acts I and III were the same, merely a big box, dressed differently. It is a brilliant concept.

Los Angeles is blessed with a wealth of talented artists who make their home here, and the LA Opera has benefited from this rich local talent pool, having had opera sets designed by artists like David Hockney and operas directed by great Hollywood directors. This production of Der Rosenkavalier was directed by Maximilian Schell, and with remarkable set and costume design by artist Gottfried Helnwein.

The LAO's compelling new production of Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" bears the intriguing vision of Hollywood legend, actor/director Maximilian Schell, and the marvellous designs of Austrian-born, Los Angeles-based visual artist Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein's brilliant costumes are also character driven. Sophie's duenna Marianne (soprano Susan Foster) is garbed like a Shakespearean nurse, Sophie is an idealized Helen of Troy, while the schemers Valzacchi and Annina (tenor Anthony Laciura and mezzo-soprano Margaret Thompson) could be straight out of Mozart's "Don Giovanni'. In short a production that clearly needs to be visited again and again to fully reveal its symbolic and metaphoric riches. Perhaps the greatest glory of this "Der Rosenkavalier" is its visual unpredictability.

The 24-hour city is already a reality for art-lover Lou Reed. Reed was dining with a friend - the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein - on Sunday night, when he decided he wanted to see Helnwein's new show at the Robert Sandelson Gallery. "I had just taken to my bed when I got a phone call from Gottfried", says Sandelson. "But I'm an old fan of Lou Reed so I went as I was and opened up at midnight." For nearly an hour, Sandelson stood in his nightwear and "yawned away while they analysed the pictures in detail".

The production designer is the internationally famed German artist, sculptor and photographer Gottfried Helnwein and he chose to color individually each of the three acts. Act I is blue to "represent the dawn and the gentle melancholy thereof." Act II is gold and yellow, the "colors of wealth and royalty," while Act III is red to denote its heady passions.

For the portraits in Sehnsucht, the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein photographed the musicians in facial bandages, their lips and eyes stretched wide apart by hideous medical instruments. There is an echo of Trakl, again, in these “cold metal straps.” But it is unreasonable, the musicians protest, to think that images such as this might evoke obscene historical memories. “It’s just reverse discrimination because we are German,” says Lorenz. “If we were Spanish or Dutch, there would be no problem.”

Flimm gewann für Bühne und Kostüme Gottfried Helnwein, der angeblich notorisch Drastik und Provokation sucht, zunächst aber ein ingeniöser Bildmacher ist, -ein Maler, Grafiker und Fotograf. Das verbindet ihn mit William Hogarth, dem englischen Kupferstecher, dessen Bilderzyklen Strawinsky zur Oper inspirierten. Doch 250 Jahre später setzt Helnwein nicht bei Hogarth und seiner realistisch genauen Darstellung der Londoner Casinos, Lusthöllen und Irrenhäuser an. Helnwein arrangiert eine magische Zeitlosigkeit durch präzise Rekostruktion konkreter Stile und zugleich fantasiegeborener Kreationen. Selten erlebte man die plastische Wirkungskraft von Kostümen so intensiv wie in Helnweins schiefem, nach rechts sich neigendem Kubusraum, in den zur Linken drei Türen eingelassen sind und dessen hellweisse Flächen immer wieder Bildprojektionen dienen, Kostüme und Bilder sind von ausgesuchtem Antipsychologismus, von entwaffnend stereotyper Symbolik, so wie Audens und Kallmans Text, wie Strawinskys Musik. Die virtuelle Welt Second Life hat in letzter Zeit nicht nur zahlreiche Bands angezogen, sondern auch Künstler: Gottfried Helnwein, der in der Szene vor allem durch seine Photosessions mit Marilyn Manson (Bild) bekannt ist, zieht es ebenfalls ins Internet. Am 17.05. eröffnet der Österreicher in Second Life ein einzigartiges Museum.

One of the most important productions of the Israeli Opera's 25th anniversary season is the world premiere of the opera The Child Dreams, based on the most poetic and lyric play by the late Hanoch Levin, undoubtedly, one of Israel's greatest playwrights. With his stage design, costumes, make-up and videos, Gottfried Helnwein created a breathtaking and revolutionary new visual realization for that play. Together with director Omri Nitzan he developed a new conception for the adaption as an opera . Composed is the opera by Israeli composer Gil Shohat, and David Stern, the Israeli Opera's music director, is conducting this new opera featuring closed to 20 Israeli opera singers on the stage. Helnwein also included dancer and choreographer Gregor Seyffert who is in charge of the choreography.

The "Sehnsucht" cover, designed by Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, shows ashen-faced band members bound, poked and disfigured by painful looking clamps and wires. The band's publicity photos are just as grisly.

`The Portrait Obscured,'' the current exhibit at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, where 19 artists have all but forgone the portrait entirely in their pursuit of it. The exhibit's signature pieces are two paintings by the Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein. A bit of perceptual sleight of hand, two seemingly blue-black canvases on close inspection reveal portraits of John Lennon and Bruce Lee. Portraits obscured, to be sure, and perhaps a meditation on how unknowable are the famous by their famous faces.

Die "Scorpions" sind die erfolgreichste deutsche Band aller Zeiten. Seit 1969 musizieren Klaus Meine und Rudolf Schenker mit wechselnden Begleitern, auch Matthias Jabs gehört zur Stammformation. Kultstatus erreichte das 1981 von Gottfried Helnwein gestaltete Cover der LP "Blackout". Vor allem im Ausland feierten die "Scorpions" Erfolge: "Still loving you" zum Beispiel ist bis heute in Frankreich die meistverkaufte Single. Die Hardrocker aus Hannover beeinflussten Bands wie "Van Halen", "Bon Jovi" oder "Smashing Pumpkins".

On December 3, 2005, Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese were married in a private, non-denominational ceremony at Helnwein's castle. The wedding was officiated by surrealist film director and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky, Gottfried Helnwein was best man. They exchanged vows in front of approximately 60 guests, including Lisa Marie Presley.

Denn Jürgen Flimms Inszenierung wird ausgestattet von Gottfried Helnwein, dem streitbaren österreichischen Maler, Filmemacher, Fotograf und Aktionskünstler, der die vertonten Gemälde rückübersetzt in neue, freie Bildwelten, assoziativ und provozierend zugleich. Eine zitatenhafte Videocollage hat er vorgesehen, die auf die leere Bühne projiziert wird, grelle, stimmungsvolle Impressionen, die nichts mit Naturalismus gemein haben, sondern Zeichenhaftigkeit anstreben und damit die Parabel betonen. Mit Hamburg verbinden Helnwein übrigens einschneidende Erfahrungen: Das Plakat, das er 1988 für Peter Zadeks "Lulu"-Produktion am Schauspielhaus entworfen hatte, löste wegen seines angeblich pornografischen Gehalts Stürme der Entrüstung aus. Und Hans Kresniks "Pasolini"-Stück, das er ebendort ausstattete, sorgte für kaum weniger Aufsehen.

Strawinskys “The Rake´s Progress” hat am 10.06. unter Flimm /Helnwein/ Metzmacher Premiere » Flimm hat gemeinsam mit Helnwein, der auch die witzigen, farcenhaft übersteigerten Kostüme entworfen hat, am Bühnenbild gefeilt. «Die kleine Bühne macht die Figuren sehr stark. Und passend zu dem plakativen Stück hat Helnwein großformatig Videos und Dias mit Großstadtszenen und verzerrten Gesichtern in den Raum projiziert.»

Wie Dir vielleicht bewusst ist, wurde „The Golden Age Of Grotesque“ zum Großteil von Tim Skold von KFMDM geschrieben. Diese Band wiederum ist ein Haupteinfluss von Rammstein. Die ganze Platte hat den exakten Duktus simpler Riffs, auch der Sound war nicht unmaßgeblich von eben dieser Band beeinflusst. Von ein paar wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen. Auch optisch nähert man sich dem Look and Feel an, es ist kein Zufall, dass Gottfried Helnwein nicht nur das Album-Cover von Rammsteins “Sehnsucht”, sondern auch von Marilyn Mansons “The Golden Age Of Grotesque” gemacht hat und dürfte ziemlich klar machen, dass nicht nur Skold, sondern auch Brian Warner eben diese Band gut kannten. Du brauchst ja zusätzlich nur mal die Logos und Videos angucken. Levin's profoundly philosophical, abstract and ironic, sharply pointed ideas hardly lend themselves to the operatic medium. What came closest to Levin's spirit were Gottfried Helnwein's set and Omri Nitzan's direction. These were the main heroes of the performance, highly imaginative, altogether unconventional - without gliding into sophistication - and thought provoking.

Beim Titelsong des von Gottfried Helnwein gestalteten, provokativen „Blackout“-Plattencovers torkelt Schenker mit Kopfverband und Gabeln vor den Augen über die Bühne und zum Finale nach 90 Minuten soliden Kraftrocks gibt es auch die klassische „Scorpionspyramide“, bei der Meine zwischen Schenker und Jabs auf deren Oberschenkeln balanciert. Nun jubelt das Publikum mit Händen und Füßen. Und die Musiker können in lautstarkem Applaus baden.

Bis heute spielen sie beim Glyndebourne Festival regelmäßig die von dort 1975 in die Welt gereiste Variante mit dem Bühnenbild von David Hockney, der vor allem Hogarths Interieurs nachbaute. In Salzburg hat Jörg Immendorff ausgestattet, in Jürgen Flimms Hamburger Deutung Gottfried Helnwein. Die letzte spektakuläre Inszenierung von Robert Lepage verfrachtete Strawinsky glamourös nach Hollywood.

Die Ausstellung. Rolling Stones Gitarrist Ron Wood werkt seit Jahren auch als Maler. Ab 13. Juli stellt er seine Arbeiten in Wien aus. Woods nennt den Österreicher Gottfried Helnwein als Vorbild: "Helnwein hat über die Jahre einen einzigartigen Stil entwickelt und gilt heute als einer der Grössten der Welt. Sein grandioses Jagger-Bild aus den Achzigern gilt noch heute als legendär."

Eigentlich ein schrecklicher Anblick, wenn sich nach der Pause der Vorhang hebt und das Publikum spontan klatscht, weil das Schlussbild der Oper "The Child Dreams"so toll ausschaut. Das Bewusstsein, dass der Himmel voll toter, blutiger Kinder hängt, kommt später an als der atemberaubende Eindruck von Gottfried Helnweins Bühnenbild.

Zu einem Ereignis wurde die Aufführung vor allem durch das Bühnenbild und die Kostüme von Gottfried Helnwein. Dessen Kinderportraits in unheilschwangerer Erstarrung haben schon lange Markenzeichen-Qualität und werden von dem 1948 geborenen österreichischen Künstler in allen Medien konfektioniert.

Tolerate this. Imagine penitents scuttling down a valley of tears, as every thing around them erupts in squeals of meaty humbuckers and slithering single-coils, leaving nothing but scorched bloody earth. A cloud of burning flesh. A tremble of misshapen shadows. Everything is shot to hell. A vision of Bosch, with a backdrop by Gottfried Helnwein, and soundtracked by a tiger moon quartet called Intolerant.

Gottfried Helnwein and The Dreaming Child offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the creation of The Child Dreams, an opera designed by world-famous Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein for the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv in 2010. The Child Dreams is based on the play written by Israel's most celebrated playwright, Hanoch Levin, who died in 1999.

Gottfried Helnwein and the Dreaming Child is both a visual feast and landmark union of artistic titans Levin and Helnwein, both concerned with the theme of childhood innocence betrayed.

The proof is in the pudding, however, and, although limited, what we are allowed to see of the actual production is impressive indeed, in terms of set design, color, lighting and dramatic impact. Helnwein pulls off a fourth-act coup de theatre, staging Levin’s idea of a pile of dead children as a more viscerally exciting image of suspended bodies, like barely alive puppets, which is quite breathtaking.

It’s fascinating to watch Helnwein, unaccustomed to creative compromise, navigate the details and politics of a large-scale theatrical production, whether by rolling up his sleeves to daub cobalt onto a foam boulder so that it matches a craggy Caspar David Friedrich scene or micromanaging the stage makeup. In the end, Helnwein is pleased. “It brought all of the children I have painted before together,” he says of the opera’s fourth act. “I treat the staging like a canvas, but it’s three-dimensional and everything moves.”

One of the great things about this documentary is that, while many out there might be familiar with Helnwein’s artwork or installations, they may not be familiar with where his ideas come from, or what it’s like when he works. In that way, the film is a wonderful look at a stunning contemporary artist.

The sets and costumes designed by the artist are indeed visually impressive, especially a haunting image of children suspended over the stage like ascending angels.

Helnwein's vision of how to visually present this opera has created a world that many may find hard to look at. I expect that is exactly his goal. It should be hard to look at the way children are so easily discarded or forgotten. The opera, the art, and the film all serve to remind us not only of the deep sin of the Holocaust, but of the many ways such crimes against children continue day by day. We may want to turn away, but to ignore the problem is to allow it to grow.

Perhaps one of the toughest things to do is to capture the creative process on film. A movie showing a writer tapping away at a keyboard, or a musician putting down the notes he hears in his head, tells you nothing about what the artist is actually going through. Perhaps the closest we’ve gotten is the 1956 documentary “The Mystery of Picasso” where the camera is placed on one side of a canvas and an unseen Picasso creates pictures on the other side. We watch as the pigments bleed through while the work is being formed, and try to anticipate what the artist will do next. “Gottfried Helnwein and the Dreaming Child” is a similar attempt. The 2011 documentary, newly released to DVD, is about a different kind of art: the production of an opera. As with a dramatic film, a stage performance like an opera is a collaboration of many talents, which means there are going to be compromises, differences of opinion and, sometimes, an artistic vision that must fight through competing visions. That is what occurred here.

Outside the Osbournes' mansion last week, Manson and modernist Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein premiered two paintings from a collection that will be used as The Golden Age of Grotesque's artwork and will travel with the singer. Inspired by the glamour of 1930s Hollywood, the grotesque of vaudeville and the erotic art movement in Weimar Berlin, the pieces are disturbing portraits of Manson wearing the classic Mickey Mouse ears hat. "This is an image of innocence and an image of childish nightmares," Manson explained. "This is, to me, growing up in America, what I saw in entertainment and the contrasting extremes of beauty and ugliness.

Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio Lakeview Museum of Arts and Science, Peoria, Illinois Nexus Contemporary Arts Center, Atlanta, Georgia Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland . ...the portraits of Hendrix, Joplin, and Lennon are particulary stirring because their ghostlike treatment translates as a poetic and humble tribute to major creative forces whose lives were tragically cut short. As exemplified by the paintings of Helnwein, the purpose of a contemporary rock and roll portrait may extend well beyond biographical signification to stimulating reflection upon larger issues of social or political consequence.

Insomma, “Sehnsucht” è un album pieno zeppo di significati duplici (se non triplici) che di univoco ha solo l’assurda monotonia di ogni singolo brano, che porta allo sfinimento con il suo infinito ripetersi di segmenti chitarristici e ritmiche da dance floor infernale. L’artwork stesso, ad opera dell’artista visuale Gottfried Helnwein, è un gioiello in tal senso. Nel libretto i membri della band sono ritratti addobbati da ferraglia assortita e presentano una pelle cerulea che fa pensare a sei cadaveri imbellettati per una macabra mostra, mentre sul retro troviamo una spiaggia immortalata con tinte scure che, seppur nel gelo che l’ammanta, non manca di cozzare col resto del libretto.

The album foldout showcases alternate covers, created by prolific Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein who also worked with the Scorpions on their album Blackout (note the covers' similarities). The art features harshly lit images of each band member in streaked white face paint against a black background. Fetishistic torture devices adorn their heads, from the barbed-wire open-mouth gag on drummer Christoph Schneider to the most popular version featuring blinders and a muzzle on front man Till Lindeman. A Helnwein retrospective featuring the artist's work with Rammstein went on display in 1997 starting at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and eventually made it to such prestigious institutes as SFMOM in San Francisco and LACMA in Los Angeles.

Today I started to work with legendary painter/artist Gottfried Helnwein. Thanks to Cyril, his son, we met some time ago and are now collaborating. Today: Lighting, camera tests, juggling. I am too exhausted to reveal the details of our work but it is multi-media-prop chaos that I know will please many and enrage more. He has worked with Marlena Dietrich and was chosen by Time Magazine to paint JFK on the 20th anniversary of his assassination. The Simon Wiesenthal Foundation supported his work in Europe and here in Los Angeles, the Museum of Tolerance will be displaying a series of portraits that were vandalized by neo-fascists who labeled them "degenerate art." We have seen something of the 'look' created via Manson's collaboration with artist Gottfried Helnwein - While the Album remains a sealed box in musical terms, Manson will wax lyrical about the inspirations and influences that helped shape it. There are the people - as well as Calloway, he nods to Oscar Wilde and the loose collective of radical artists and agents provocateurs - collaborator Helnwein among them - who were dubbed the Viennese Actionists. " The Grotesque Burlesque takes what we've done in the past and brings it to a completely different level. This is making everyone a part of your creation. It's realising that art is more than music, more than people listen to it, more than people who play it - it is the combination of all that. Gottfried Helnwein is someone who knows how to artfully provoke. He would take some of his creations and he'd bring them out into the streets. It became an instance where people wouldn't know what was the show and what wasn't the show. That's such a beautiful thing. It's like being in the playground - you're not really sure who's on what team, or what the real objective is.

Es herrscht Krieg zwischen den Menschen. Die Sprache wird zur Waffe. Die deutsch-französische Koproduktion "Hamletmadchine" ist eine Expedition in ein modernes Inferno. Heiner Müllers Stück über die gesellschaftliche Legitimation von Gewalt, einen zerrissenen Weltflüchtlimg namens Hamlet, eine ihren Hass herausbrüllende Ophelia (Opernsängerin Claudia Dennighaus) als verstörende Endzeitvision. Regie führt Gert Hof, der ehedem der DDR ihr erstes Rockspektakel mit der Band Pankow schenkte - das vom Kulturministerium höchstpersönlich abgesetzt wurde - und viele Projekte mit Blixa Bargeld und den Einstürzenden Neubauten verwirklichte. Das Ensemble des "Exorzismus eines Alptraums" ist die französische Kultband Les Tambours du Bronx. Bühnenbild und Kostüme schuf Popartist und malendes Enfant Terrible Gottfried Helnwein. Hof will kein verschrobenes Intellektuellentheater machen. Er verspricht eine "Performance der Sinnne. Ein Triptychon aus Musik, Malerei und Licht."

A: Welche Maler und bildenden Künstler haben dich am meisten beeinflusst? Manson: Egon Schiele, Gottfried Helnwein, Luis Buñuel, Dalí, [Hieronymus] Bosch, Warhol, Mark Ryden, Fellini. Und so weiter... A: Wie weit sind die Studioarbeiten an dem neuen Album (The Golden Age of Grotesque) fortgeschritten? Sind die Aufnahmen abgeschlossen? Manson: Ja, jetzt geht es in den Mix. A: Hast du Interesse an der Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstlern (abgesehen von Tim Skold) an neuen Projekten? Manson: Vielleicht mit Felix Da House Kat. D12 versuchen schon länger mit mir was zu machen. Ich bin aber zur Zeit ganz mit Helnwein und einigen damit verbundenen Projekten beschäftigt. Es kommt wirklich auf die Umstände an. Ich mag es nicht Musik außerhalb der Band zu machen. Das wird einfach zu unkoordiniert.

Daß der Proll-Anteil im Publikum, der so oder ähnlich genauso bei den Ärzten, Hosen oder gar Böhsen Onkelz zu finden ist, in letzter Zeit zugenommen hat, hat Flake ja bereits erwähnt. Das ist doch irgendwie seltsam: auf der einen Seite der „künstlerische" Aspekt Rammsteins, der sich in der Zusammenarbeit mit David Lynch, Gottfried Helnwein und einer geplanten Anti-Bücherverbrennungs-Performance zeigt, und andererseits solche Fans. Wie paßt denn das zusammen?

Der Bühnenbildner Gottfried Helnwein, zweite prägende Figur des Abends, hat das turbulente Libretto W.H. Audens in einem abstrakten Einheitsbühnenbild verortet, dessen Wände expressionistisch schief aufragen und sich durch Licht und Videoprojektionen effektvoll zu verwandeln wissen. Dabei entstehen teilweise überzeugende Traum- und Alptraumbilder: Anna Trulove (Gabriele Rossmanith), die verlassene Geliebte, sucht ihren Rumtreiber Rakewell (Bruce Fowler) und wandelt dabei zerbrechlich mit einem blauen Schirmchen durch die Londoner Unwirtlichkeit, die sie als Fernseh-Schneetreiben auf den Bühnenwänden umgibt. Das Schlussbild der Inszenierung schwingt noch auf dem Heimweg nach: die in Zeitlupe einstürzenden Bühnenwände, die einzig ein von der Liebe singendes Paar verschonen. Mehr Oper wäre gar nicht nötig gewesen.

"The Beautiful People" presents Manson as a ghostly, 13’- tall dictator in Fascist garb, flanked by equally tall obsidian angels as he rules over saluting citizens who gaze upon him with blank, hollow-eyed stares. Intercut with these shots are equally disturbing scenes of Manson strapped to a sadomasochistic orthodontic contraption that recalls the horrifically macabre milieus of Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein.

Marilyn Manson: About a year ago, I hooked up with Gottfried Helnwein, and he and I have been working together on various projects that, again, cross the boundaries between photography, painting, film, and installation. It's part of what I'm going to unleash and put into effect as the next couple of months unfold. It's stuff that people dont get to see anymore; it's stuff that happened in the '30s, '40s, '50s and even the '60s with the Panic Movement and Action. Gottfried really pushes the envelope, not just for shock value but for the betterment of art, to make people want to have style because they like it, not because they want to impress other people, to want to be creative because it feeds them and it makes them exist.

"Watch Your Music" is like interactive MTV on your own private computer. Like music CDs as sound tracks, there will be world CDs as graphic tracks. And a lot of artist from pop business, film, painting, architecture ... can create own worlds, which, of course, mirror their art and their point of view. There may be worlds from H.R. Giger, the Spice Girls, Helnwein, Disney, Bob Dylan, worlds relating to van Gogh, Warhol, Picasso, Beuys ... worlds which are based on real existing places (ocean world, moon world ...), or based on movies (cartoon world, western world ...)

Leicht, doch keineswegs zu leicht genommen haben Flimm, Helnwein und Metzmacher das dreistündige Moralmärchen des Igor Strawinsky. Die hanseatischen Opernfreunde, enttäuscht von mehreren Regie-Fehlgriffen, jubeln diesmal unbeschwert. Einen Jux machen wollen sich die Herren Helnwein und Flimm. Das gelingt ihnen. Absurd komisch gerät Toms Eheschließung mit Baba, dem vollbärtigen Zugstar vom Rummelplatz, grotesk die Versteigerung seiner Habe nach der geplatzten Luftnummer am Aktienmarkt. Leichte Regiehand lenkt selbst das Kartenspiel mit Teufel Nick, bei dem der Taugenichts sein Leben gewinnt, aber den Verstand verliert. In Zeitlupentempo bricht zwar die Irrenhauswand über Tom und Anne zusammen. Doch die Epilog-Moral tönt wieder versöhnlich.
