KAWS - Art & Comics
Angela Stief, Florian Waldvogel
A wide-ranging exploration of comics, characters, and the visual language of KAWS and his contemporaries.
KAWS. Art & Comics explores the interplay between comics, comic strips, cartoons, and fine art. It places the American artist KAWS in dialog with selected contemporary stances, focusing on the artistic autonomy of his characters—figures that unite characteristics of street, pop, commercial, and public art. Comics are characterized by a universal language and exist in many cultures as an accessible way of telling stories graphically, in words and images. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ad Reinhardt were fine artists who created comics in a near-classic vein. Even before the advent of photography and (animated) films, caricature, satire, and frame-by-frame narration offered a powerful way to convey stories across national, generational, and social boundaries.

Gottfried Helnwein - Reality and Fiction
Edited by Elsy Lahner and Klaus Albrecht Schröder
A collection of works by provocative artist Gottfried Helnwein.
Gottfried Helnwein’s paintings of children are both touching and disturbing. The hyperrealistic character of his images serves to intensify this effect still further. The vulnerable and defenseless child serves as the central motif in his examination of the themes of pain, injury, and violence.

Walt Disney's DONALD DUCK by Carl Barks
However, the weight of Barks's effect on the world runs much deeper and often along more indirect paths than such explicit influence. For example, conceptual artist extraordinaire Gottfried Helnwein once described a moment of revelation in Europe after World War II: " Opening my first Carl Barks Donald Duck comic book felt like seeing the daylight again for someone who had been trapped underground by a mine-disaster."

Helnwein talks with Carl Barks, Oregon, June, 11, 1992
Disney artist Carl Barks (1901-2000) created one of Walt Disney's most famous characters, Scrooge McDuck. Barks also produced more than 500 comic book stories. His work is ranked among the most widely circulated, best-loved, and most influential of all comic book art.
Although the images he created are known virtually everywhere, Barks was an isolated storyteller, living in the desert of California and preferring to labor without public fanfare during most of his career.
The influence of Barks's work on such filmmakers as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and on such artists as Gottfried Helnwein has extended Barks's significance far beyond the boundaries of comics.

Those who have used the same or multiple forms of the image many times over many years include Lichtenstein, Helnwein, Oldenburg, Pensato, Ospina, and Chagoya. The facade of Disney and America in the guise of the Mouse is one of the things that Helnwein and others present to us. Claes Oldenburg took the facade to its literal extreme when he proposed a flat Mouse's image for a facade to Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, and produced a flat Mouse sculpture. Helnwein, Oldenburg and others are using the Mouse to make social and cultural comments about our society, in the broadest sense, but with humor.
