Body Anxious
Jesse Levesque.
Curator
The exhibit will explore the intersection of art, the body, and medical procedures, with the implicit fear of bodily pain (real or imagined) as a major theme. The human body is vulnerable and mortal, yet it is also the biological basis of human existence. "Body Anxious" includes works by artists from around the world, in, often, unconventional media, who examine the anxieties associated with medical procedures and instruments, and other experiences that remind us of our shared precarious biological condition. Artists include: Gottfried Helnwein, Kiki Smith, Diana Falchuk, James R. Southard, Drew Sellers, Cristin Millet and Chiharu Shiota.

Curated by Jesse Levesque.

With excellent faculty, facilities and resources, the Allen R. Hite Art Institute is the largest studio art program, and the only Ph.D. program in art history in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Institute has over 550 undergraduate majors, 60 graduate students, 23 full-time faculty members and a full-time staff of six.The Hite Art Institute offers B.A. Degrees in Studio Art and Art History and B.F.A. Degrees in 2-D Studios, 3-D Studios, Communication Art & Design, and Interior Architecture. The Institute also offers an interdisciplinary M.A. program which provides an integrated core curriculum bringing together art historians, artists and museum professionals in an innovative setting and allowing students to explore research topics and obtain degrees in Studio Art, Art History and Critical & Curatorial Studies.

The show features a moving and disturbing cast of artists, including the international hyper-realist painter and high-life art star Gottfried Helnwein of Ireland and the unpretentious, almost clinical print-maker, German-born American Kiki Smith of New York City. Others in the show include Cristin Millet of Philadelphia, Diana Falchuk of Seattle, Japanese-born Chiharu Shiota of Berlin and James R. Southard of Louisville. All have an interest in the transience of life and its cultural mysteries.
